No oil cooler??

Looking at some pics of the Desmo Devil. Not my favorite Duc but there are some cool ideas in there, no doubt. I noticed its not using an oil cooler and the ports are plugged up on the engine. How is it possible for this engine to run? Maybe it doesnt and just poses for pics?

I assure you, it runs.  Hell, it's actually quite quick!  The presence of an oil cooler on a 900 motor isn't mandatory.  Running without one just requires the use of a better grade of oil (high $ full synthetic for instance). 

If anyone is considering removing their oil cooler, be advised that there's a thin spring steel 'plate' sandwiched under the oil filter mounting bolt that has to be removed in addition to the line ports being plugged...

Right. Called the "oil bypass spring" (I did some research just now). Seems an oil cooler is not exactly necessary. Just slightly higher viscosity oil. I ride inner city mostly so the cooler doesnt even work (stop and go traffic n shit). Seems that Amsoil and Red Line have the highest flash point.
(maybe this should be moved to Tech?)

and I certainly wouldn't mind taking your seconds off you so you don't have to have oily stuff lying around your garage. I'll even pay for shipping  :)

The oil temp will be higher in a stop and go situation...

and rarely does a bike get hot enough to worry about flash temp

Of course. But the higher flash point just shows higher tolerance to heat in general.
Question is, what weight? 50? 60?
Does the 620 use a thicker viscosity to counter the lack of a cooler?

Of course to what?

If your engine runs hot enough to smoke oil...

you need a cooler. I don't care what the relative flash point is.;D

I wouldn't go past 20/50. It's what's recommended for the earlier bikes like your 750.

The top end could suffer damage at start up temps if the oil was too thick.

It takes a while for oil to get there as it is.

All good things to consider. Guess I can try it and switch back if things are not right. Maybe 15/50...

15/50 would be fine IMO...

This time of year , depending on the temps, 10/40 might be OK. It would help with cold starts on cool/cold mornings.
