2012 M796 - Restarting after stalling out?

Hey guys,

I've noticed the few times that after I've stalled out, the bike really struggles to restart.  Since you hear the injector pump go when you first turn on the bike, I'd imaging it's short on fuel after stalling out or something (I'm no guru, but just a guess). Usually it cranks for a few seconds and eventually starts, but the other day it took me almost a minute to get it to start.  Cranked and cranked, I shut it off for a few seconds, turned the key back to run, injector pumped, and still struggled to start.

I'm just worried that this may happen at a red light or something, I don't want to look like an idiot sitting there cranking away  [thumbsdown]

Thanks in advance!

How many miles? Has it had it's first service? At lot of quirks like this disappear after 1,200 - 1,500 miles. If more miles, see your dealer.

BTW, mine doesn't like to fire first time after sitting a few days regardless of how much cranking I do. Learned from an M1100S owner to wait a few minutes after that initial attempt. Then it fires right up. It's Siemens ECU-related.

The 796 has an ECU protocol which shuts off the fuel or spark instantly (not sure which) if it fails to run after a couple of revolutions. PITA I'm quite sure it would always start if it could be cranked for a few seconds.

Thanks man, yea that's exactly what it seems like.  Bike is at 5k miles, has had both the 750 mile and 1 year services done. Seems like its computer related as everything still sounds healthy.  Has only happened once or twice, but I figured I'd ask.

Thanks for the help!

Post here or contact me by PM if you discover a cause or other workaround for what the ECU is doing. I'm at 4,000 miles, and while I have an excellent dealer, he's 140 miles from me. DNA wanted him to do a bunch of tests and take cold readings. That's just not convenient as it would require two 280 mile trips. Before the warranty is up next July, and hopefully at 7,500 miles, he can keep it for a week if he wants. Might need a new ECU unless he can find a sub-par sensor or dodgy connection.

Keep us posted.

I will definitely let you know.  I haven't had any problems  recently, I've been DD'ing the bike for 6 weeks now as my car is in the shop, but haven't had any problems.  I did notice that if it sits for more than a minute, it has no trouble starting back up.
