OK so the other day I was riding my much loved Ducati Monster 916cc s4 2002. then as I backed off to go down a hill It just died. so I pulled over...

Ive had a Look at a few things, the fuel pump works, Its getting fuel down the throttle bodies, It has spark when i pull the plug out and hold it against the frame... So it should start yeh? it fires once or twice but wont keep going. [bang] here is a picture of the sick duc

I know you say you're getting fuel, but how long since the filter was replaced ?

About 12 months... If if was a fuel issue I thought it would atleast slatter before it died. It seemed to loss all ignition. but its getting spark.

Is the fuel in your area generally of good quality?

Belts in good order?

Not familiar with Caltex. Did you buy fuel from a different station?

Pull the covers and have a look at the belts. How many miles/km since those were changed?

As dp suggested, check the belts first.

If they're still in good shape, and the tension is good, and the cam timing marks still line up properly...
then we'll go to phase 2 in the troubleshooting.

Was it freezing balls outside? I've been having some cold start issues. This morning I was riding to work, didn't let her warm up long enough and she just died at the light. Wouldn't start...few hours later started right up first try in 10 degrees warmer temp. Did you ever get it started again?

I had this EXACT issue not 2 weeks ago after buying 98 at a local servo.

Pulled the fuel pump and filter.  pump gauze had crud around a small section, just the exact same size as the intake on the pump - the pump was sucking the gauze hard up to the inlet because it was clogged with bits of crap.

the Fuel filter I pulled and rand some thinners and acetone backwards through it to see if anything suspiciously nasty would come out… Sure enough it was full of little bits of fine grain black sooty evil shit.

so I got my mityvac and ran a bunch of clean fuel through the fuel lines and some methylbenzine in the tank.

went for a really hard run after I got it fired up and running again.

All's fine now… culprit is likely the shit in the bottom of your tank clogging the inlet on the pump gauze.

time to replace if it looks crappy.  and replace the filter too. peace of mind.
