Ok I'm at work so I'm trying to make this quick. I just re-oiled my filter yesterday and I'm hoping this is the issue and not something else. But I let the filter sit out over night. This morning before work I was putting it back on the bike and noticed it was still pretty wet. I wiped off the edges and then blew out excess with my compressor hose. Put it in the bike, started it up, warmed up, drove to work...almost. I work about 2 miles from work...the bike shut off half a block away from work. It didn't just kill...it kind of sputtered like it was choking. I switched gears, it sputtered again and it shut itself off. I put it in 2nd and tried to start while rolling but nada. Pushed it the rest of the way to work and parked it. That's where it is now and I cant even focus at work right now. What do you guys think? Filter to wet maybe and choked it out? Or worse maybe? Or something completely different?

Will try to start it on my lunch...until then any suggestions or input would be awesome.

It's pretty unlikely the filter has anything to do with it quitting, I'd look for a pinched vent or fuel line first

+1 to that. You had the tank up to access the filter - so it's quite possible you pinched a breather hose when you put it back down. Open up the filler cap, run the prime cycle a couple times (just cycle the run/kill swtich) close the filler and it should fire right up of it is a pinched hose.

You'll still need to pop the tank up again and address the root issue - but temp venting via the filler is an easier way to check
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Not completely understanding this. bike is 96 M900 FCR carbs

Went back out at lunch. Lifted the tank and checked the hoses. All looked well, put the key in, got power, kill switch dis-engaged, pressed starter button...nada. No crank nothing happened. Checked the fuses, all looked well. checked main 30a fuse next to carbs, busted. Bought a new one, put it in, started smoking and fuse popped. Bad ground? Would that have blown while riding and caused the bike to shut off? Or the ground loosened up while riding?

I don't think a bad ground would blow the main fuse.  Look for a short between that fuse and the fuse panel

Have you changed the battery lately?

If not, check the wiring for a short from the regulator to the main fuse.

Haven't changed the battery but I have had the battery out to service it. A few weeks ago

Will check that wiring also.

Make sure the battery isn't in backwards.

usual sympton of a dud reg/rect taking out that fuse

unplug the reg and try again with a new fuse

if it starts and runs then you have found your problem
i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

When I put the new fuse in yesterday, smoke came up from the front of the bike. Reg/rect area...I may start there

Battery is in right, phew. Lol
Cool...but you'd be surprised how often it happens.
