I am thinking about buying boom tubes and I'm sure this has been discussed here before..does my 696 need a tune if I installed them?..I'd imagine there's a huge reduction in back pressure and also the length of the two exhaust pipes are much shorter and also much different in length to each other..would my local Ducati shop be able to do the tune?
I love the idea of freeing up the rear end of weight and big cans...and all that heat!
any input is appreciated.

A tune wouldn't hurt.
The pipes aren't just short unequal length pipes. they are engineered. there is a crossover and pretty certain their equal length up to the crossover.
you'll need an aftermarket fuel controller for tuning though.

rexxer would not hurt . . . that way he can also do his own diagnostics and he gets 2 maps, one custom and one for free for a later mod . . . |

Mmm... no. Horizontal header is roughly twice the length of the vertical. How free they flow and whether they "need" a tune will depend on which baffles you get. Also keep in mind that there will be a CONSIDERABLE lead time once you order. |

Savory said that there's adequate back pressure and he's designed them to negate the need for a tune..he said a tune would help eek out a few more HP but said it will certainly not harm the engine..there is a dyno near me which will do a baseline for $80 so I may take her in and check her vitals after I install them...
no considerable lead time here, as I bought the "Sandy" ones.

Unless you've already had them baseline your current setup.

Thanks bucket head... And in regards to earlier mention of engineered equal length runners: There is a lot of talk about 'equal length' runners and that if an aftermarket exhaust is not equal length it will suffer performance wise. Well our own factory exhaust is NOT equal length. On the new gen monsters the vert cylinder runners are 6" longer than the horizontal. Measured from header flange to the merge point in the mid pipe vert is 38" horiz is 32". Riddle me that... |

We snaked tailor's tape through the exhaust then pulled it taught - Not NASA accurate but probably good for +/- 1" especially on these 'shortish' pipes. We're building a one-off full exhaust for the 796 so I was adamant about have the primaries equal length like everyone assumes they are stock...until we got the stock exhaust off and measured everything up! There may be something magical about the 32" and 38" lengths that Ducati engineered, or the ratio of the lengths to each other (exhaust pulse timing), but equal length they are not. |
