Quick 796 oil change question

Changed oil today. Manual calls for 3.9 quarts. Only got three in before it was in the level in the widow, that was with priming the filter. Ran it for a minute, still same level. Normal? Yes? No?

Just don't want to run around a quart low...

The capacity stated in the manual is for a dry engine.  When you change oil some stays trapped in the engine and cooler.  How much varies.  Slightly under is better than slightly over.

Thanks, that's was what I thinking but just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. I'll check it again today just to make sure

Did you change the oil when the bike was on a rear stand?  If so keep in mind that it will read lower than the actual amount if it's on the rear stand... if you fill it to the line when it's on a rear stand then you will have overfilled it.

Nope filled it with the bike upright. Checked the level again today and it's holding at full

Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W40 is certainly good oil. However, if you are operating the bike in traffic in a hot climate, the bike will do a lot better on the full synthetic 15W50 your manual specifies. My dealer uses Redlline 15W50 ester-based synthetic. In my Triumph I use 20W50 Mobil 1 V-Twin because I never ride anywhere near freezing but do ride in 95 F occasionally. Mobil 1 used to make a Racing 4T 15W50 for Triumph but Triumph switched the contract over to Castrol, so Mobil 1 now recommend the V-Twin for this application. I see that Redline now make a 20W50 motorcycle-specific oil although the ester-based 15W50 is no issue for wet clutches and must contain no friction modifiers.

Couldn't figure out where you live, so you'll have to work this out for yourself.

So I went back and read this thread after my clutch started slipping and I'm curious why the 15W50 would work better in hotter weather? The weather where I'm at goes from the high 20's ( which I will not be riding in) to the low 100's. This might be a novice question when it comes to oil but I haven't done too much reading about it.

says 15W50 but the temp chart next to it says 10W40 should work. I Just read the oil thread sticky and it wasnt very conclusive. Would using 10-40 instead of 15-50 cause the clutch to slip in hot weather / city riding in hot weather?

That's HOT weather, and you need motorcycle-specific oil for wet clutches. You definitely need 15W50 for top end protection or 20W50. Worst case, you can use Mobil 1 V-Twin which you will find in many auto parts stores. FWIW, my dealer, ex-champion Ducati racer uses ONLY Redline 15W50 which is ester-based and works with wet clutches. No oil with friction modifiers will, so stay away from "auto" oil, no matter HOW exotic.

I just changed my oil and filter on my 2013 monster 796 today. The oil that came about was about 76 ounces or about 2.5 quarts. I poured in about 3 quarters and its resting at about half way on the sight glass. What gives?
