Dented front wheel. Ok to race?
«

I have a small dent on my front wheel. Well it goes out, not in so I don't know if this is really a dent but I don't know what to call it.
Anyway, the affected area is about 40mm in length and at its highest point (from inside edge of rim) measures a 5mm gap from the tire.
Been riding it like this since I got the bike 2 yrs ago. Never had any problems holding air. So unproblematic I forgot about it. Until I signed up for a track day (NESBA).
1) will this pass inspection? I will call them tomorrow but I thought I'd ask here cuz I like you folks (awwww...)
2) will it cause me any danger? I had my bike up to 90 on the highway with no issues but that's a lot different than taking a low corner at 50.
I hope the consensus is 'ok' cuz I can't afford a new wheel att.

whether or not it passes the tech inspection is up to them. occaisionally tech inspectors can be real bitter and vengeful.
it's fairly common on the bikes with 60 series front tyres. the 70 series offers a lot more protection for the rim, as it has hit some sort of sharp edge or pothole.
should be able to be straightened just fine.

If I understand you correct you have damaged rim which does not affect your riding.
If you damaged area will increase and your tire will start loosing air you
might not notice
that until it is
tooooooooo late
, your tire may deflate instantly and you will lose control.

Yeah personally I'd have it fixed or get a new rim....there's more than just yourself on the track.

Pretty sure you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something on evil bay to suit. There seems to be plenty about, I've bought quite a few ducati bits off ebay from the US, I'm in Oz and all have been quality kit.
Pretty sure if you find a wheel with the same axle diameter it'll fit, just check the hub width where the discs mount.

Do you have a hollow or solid axle?

Also there are some rim repair services around internet. Rim repair is cheaper and pretty reliable.

I'm not "racing"...just doing a track day.
Measured the axle diameter on the right leg and its 25mm. Such a pain that Ducati went all haywire with parts for a few years.

Is the axle hollow?

From end to end? No. The right side is hollowed out but no, I can't see to the other side.
I found a three spoke on Craigslist from a 2000 Monster here. Seller said he would measure the axle hole tomorrow. No price, just best offer. Fingers crossed because I think 50 bucks is all I can spend at the moment.

I posted in your 'parts wanted' thread, but if the pic I put there is correct, you've got a 20mm axle.

I'm positive you are right. But when I measured the ID of the hole in the fork lower I got 25mm.
Spoke to a guy at NESBA and emailed him a pic. Trust me I
want
a new wheel, but the wife and I just had a deck built so no further bike purchases for a bit. But we'll see. Theres still nearly 2 months to find something. I'm sure it will work out...

The axle has a built in spacer and gets smaller.
Look at the threads on the other side.
