This was gnarly.  I drove by just after it happened in my car.  I saw 2 barely covered bodies in the middle of the highway.
One of them was definitely wearing shorts, not sure about helmets [who knows with CONN helmet laws].   
I'm kind of mad at myself for my initial reaction which was "damn squids"...   it just sucks because it probably could have been avoided.
After seeing this...  the gf wont go on the bike anymore..  which is probably for the best.
Note to self and everyone:  Wear your gear and ride safe.

  Oh man, my girlfriend called me to tell me what she saw on her way back from visiting me in Boston.  She's still screwed up from what she saw.  This is another example of why I don't agree that it's your choice to wear your helmet...

My friend just told me last night he saw a really bad one coming back from UCONN this weekend. He said the bike looked like it was a chopper (too messed up to make out, too many people around it). He was driving by and the EMS was frantically working on this guy, wheeled him right past my buddies car. Guy ends up dying, my friend was really freaked out he was one of the last people to see this man alive and he doesn't even ride. Sorry, I don't have the news link.

It hits close to home when someone you know tells you about these things. I almost went with him in the cage that weekend and I'm glad I didn't because what I would have seen would have really messed with my own head. All you can really do is wear your gear and ride as safe as possible. You can't go around on the bike thinking this kind of thing is going to happen but you can certainly prepare as best you can for it.

As far as the guy goes, my friend said he heard he was plowed by a woman running a red light. He wasnt sure if he had any gear on or a helmet even, simply couldnt tell. As said before, I dont think CT has a helmet law and this guy was riding a chopper... But either way he was just a guy out riding his motorcycle on the weekend, could have been anyone, so RIP.

Why don't you agree with optional helmet laws?  The death or trauma your gf experienced?

I have no problem with optional helmet laws, so long as they don't negatively interfere with my insurance or my degree of liability in a traffic incident with a rider who has no helmet.  I will always wear my helmet regardless of what the law says.

CT doesnt even have eye protection laws, i see riders riding bare eyes all the time. I personally got hit with a giant bug on my sun glasses twice at 80mph there. Think of the carnage.

Helmet laws dont just protect you. Do you really think anyone actually wants to deal with a head trauma victim? or scrape your body of the floor?

One of the biggest things i hate, is squids wearing full helmets on their foreheads. Your better of wearing a half helmet in that situation. atleast its actually attatched to something.

I think CT and other helmet optional states require "eye protection" of some sort, I could be wrong, but all the helmet optional states I've been in require eye protection.  I think  just don't enforce it.

Of course no one wants to scrape anyone off the street, but it doesn't mean require helmets.  The same don't want to scrape people off the street argument can be used for to ban motorcycling and require cars.  It comes down to what you see as acceptable I guess. 

+1 I can't stand that.  wtf just wear a skid lid with at least the strap under your chin.  I've often played out what we happen in different crash scenarios , none of it seems pretty.

Libertarian?  no, but you have to admit we do lack some personal freedoms and responsibilities the way things are.  I don't mean motorcycle specific. 


I say let people choose, I'll be riding by with my full face on.
