Clutch Components Tolerance/Fit

Fitted a slightly used Nichols basket with slightly used oem alloy plates, gotta say, quiet as a mouse and smooth as butter. The quietest clutch I have fitted. Out of interest I checked the basket to plate tang tolerances and the used Nichols basket had a tighter fit than a new NGR basket. The fit was close enough to make me wonder if the clutch would drag but it didnt and operation was silky smooth.
Very impressive.

The Nichols was also the lightest basket out of Barnett, NGR, alloy Vee Two and alloy OEM. My only issue was fitting the ring which prevents basket finger expansion. Bloody hell those allen screws are small! No way I was going to locktite them. I nearly rounded one off putting them in. I will have to trust them to stay put. Im guessing Nichols used a very secure thread to prevent them loosening.

The NGR basket is a work of art and uses a band to prevent finger expansion (like the oem alloy basket), so no screws to mess with. It did have more clearance with the plate tangs however, so a little more slop. The old Vee Two basket I have also uses a screw on ring to stop basket expansion but uses bigger allen bolts and more of them. These are hard to find and not readily available unless Brooke Henry makes a few or ebays some he has laying around. It has a more sturdy ring system and was the second lightest basket a few grams lighter than the NGR.
The Barnett basket has steel inserts to stop the tangs chopping the basket out. I fitted one to my brothers bike. Much quieter than the alloy oem basket in my bike.
The NGR had the lowest price and is good bang for buck.
The Barnett will last with steel inserts but might be harder on plate tangs.
The Nichols is more expensive but good value and may look after the plate tangs a little longer with its tight tolerances.

At present I now am running a Nichols basket, oem alloy friction plates, Barnett driven plates, Vee Two drum, TPO springs and keepers and Corse Dynamics Ti bolts. I usually use all  Barnett plates, but I came upon some slightly used oem alloy friction plates. With a 999 radial master cylinder and old style oem slave cylinder, I have an easy clutch pull with a good, long throw and good feel.

Edit: NGR appears to be gone, but EVR appear to make the same basket. Maybe that's the new company. Motowheels should know.
