2001 monster 900 exhaust help
«
on:
July 07, 2008, 03:05:37 PM »
Hey everyone out there,
Have a 2001 monster 900 with 13,000 plus miles on it.
Still has stock pipes on it and I'm looking to change them.
Heard Termi's are great but pricey, any suggestions?
Also, will I need to change my computer or something if
I'm changing my pipes?
Will changing my pipes effect performance?
Any suggestions to where I can get a great deal on some
Thanks, all help is welcome..

I am little biased but I like QD Exhaust high mounts for that bike. I had Remus slip ons, QD Ex box and QD high mount slip ons on my 900 and by far my favorite was the QD high mounts. They had the best sound and the best performance. I used a power commander for all three but only for the Ex box did I get a custom map, the other ones I just one of the free maps available online. The power commanders are about $350.

Look at the offerings that Motowheels has. There's a lot out there, Hi, Low or in the case of the Ex_box, under.
Lots of different looks too - you can go modern with the Quat-d pipes or retro with some Megphones.
As far as fueling - if you just add slip ons you should be fine without any alterations. If you swap to a higher flowing filter like a K&N and/or opening your air box lid to allow for more air - then some way to add fuel will be needed. Power Commander makes a unit for the M900 that takes about 5 min to install. To get the most from it, you'd need/want to have it to a shop with a Dyno to tune it.
If you do go to an open air box, you'll really need to get something like a K&N filter. The paper filter media of the stock filter doesn't take well to getting wet
There are fuel maps available for download. They might work well for you, might not. I was just playing with some of the different downloaded maps on my 900 and found that one, made the bike herky jerky around 5k since it was far too lean...
