I've had my 6 y.o. in taekwondo for about 6 months now and due to injuries I haven't been able to join up.  Well I finally just said screw it- I'm going in!  Tonight was my first class and it was awesome!  I'm at least 5 pounds heavier than I should be, older than most dads in my daughter's class by far, and haven't done jack diddly squat except yardwork for about 2 years unless you count the 3 soccer games that gave me a sprained ankle for 2 months.   I'm a short, tubby, and very sweaty no-belt but I can now perform a running-flying-double-snap kick so don't mess with me!  Actually as a midfielder I once scored a laser beam shot to the upper right hand corner from about 30 yards out with the same sort of kick so this is no great surprise.  Dropped some jaws with that one.  My nickname on the field was 'the Enforcer' and soon I'll have a white belt to prove it!   [laugh]

I'll teach you a secret that drops a taekwondo opponent every time.  Punch them in the head and kick them in the balls.

Glad you had fun! [thumbsup]  Maybe we need a DMF martial arts thread.

We don't. You have enough fanboys.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

It's a lot of fun!

I had my first degree black belt when I was 12ish.  I kinda wish I stuck with it, but I had a dirtbike too so you know what got it's priority.

Yay for Krav Maga!  [thumbsup]

Lots of martial, not so much art.

soon you too will be able to kick someone in the head who is 8 ft tall, yet you won't be able to punch them effectively. welcome to TKD  ;D

i tried to start training again, but i hurt my knee so i had to stop. the other day i took out a few of my weapons and startied playing around with them. i forgot how much fun they were.

Seriously, when i am 800years old i want to rock like Lemmy! it is a religion that requires lots of determination, drugs, and Marshall stacks.

Weapons!?  We learn weapons?!  And here I thought I was just gonna learn to kick 'em in the jingle bells and run.
When I was a kid I wanted to take some form of martial arts but my Mom was single and poor.  Dad gave me a dirtbike so yep- that's where I went too.

The Grand Master of my dojang is a 10 time Korean National champion or something like that so I won't be making any attempts at punching him in the head or kicking him in the nether regions.  In fact, I've seen him kick a target dummy thing hard enough to send it end over end across the mat while most of the students can only get it to jiggle a bit.  I just want to be able to kick over my head without doing a Charlie Brown maneuver.  That's gonna require a lot of stretching for me!

different dojangs do things differently.

mine did weapons and my grandmaster also taught hapkido (i have my kukiwon in both if that means anything)

imagine the power from that kick beign directed at you as you are being used as a dummy for the class. that's when you know he likes you.  [laugh]

I don't know what a kukiwon is yet but if it's anything like- I won a cookie... I'm all in!

I don't think he wants to kick me that hard.  I'm paying class tuition for 2 now and someday a third!  :)

kukiwon is a certificate of black beltitude. you are apparently registed with the governing body of TKD as a black belt. it's like an ID card stating you can carry the rank no matter what tkd school you go to as opposed to being a black belt at jim bob's school o' kickin and then trying to transfer that rank over to another school.

we used to have people come in claiming they had their black belts trying to go straight into advanced classes who should not have been there. i'm not sure why anyone would want to do this. i used it whenfor me when i moved and didn't want to have to start out as a white belt at another gym.

ah I see... well given the aforementioned powerhouse kick I won't be rushing into any advanced courses.  I'll be thrilled to have the white belt just so my chesty man-fur isn't constantly exposed!
