Rant - F*#K*NG Mailman

I bought a new Ohlins side mount damper off of Ebay. Seller shipped it USPS and insured it for $500. He said it should be here on Saturday July 5th. I was in Seattle from Thurs - Sun.
Got a delivery confirmation today that says that "I" signed for it here in Oregon on Sat at 1:00pm. Got a copy of the slip and it has my name printed and spelled incorrectly as well as bogus signature that clearly is not mine.
Called the local post office, they told me it was delivered and signed for so there was nothing they could do. Called the main 800# for USPS and they said there was nothing I could do either. Called back to the local PO and asked for a manager to call me and to try to get some details from the dude that runs my route regarding WTF happened. Not holding my breath for a call back.
Called paypal and they told me I couldn't file a claim with them since the package was delivered and signed for.
Finally, called my bank, WAMU and they are opening a dispute claim.
Funny part about all of this.... I HAVE train tickets in my hand that show when i left and when I returned to Oregon. I have receipts from my trip in Seattle to prove I was there when this all went down. Yet I am getting treated like a lying dirt bag by the PO and Paypal. I am pretty dumbfounded by this whole thing. Seems too random to be real, which it prolly why this asshat will get away with it. Hopefully it just materializes on my door step tomorrow.

Do you live in an apartment complex or a house?
that sucks real big. Man i would try to track down who actually delivered the package, maybe the persons name is on the slip you got, then have him show you what house or door he delivered it to, and then i would go knocking on that door and see.
One time i had a knock on the door, ups dude standing there saying there was a package for me and sign here. I signed, he gave me the package and walked off. I looked at the package after he left and it was for someone two houses down. I walked it down there. Whats wierd in your case, is your saying somone signed your name? Thats wierd.
Another time the neighbors signed for my package without my knowledge or permission. A thousand dollars worth of wine given to my partying neighbors. UPS said if the person who is to sign for it is not there, they have the right to deliver to my neighbors and let them sign for it. I only found out where my stuff was by using the tracking number and seeing that the delivery address was the next door neighbors. They also signed my name.
Possibly thats what happend? Can you track the package online and see what address they sent it to?

Man that sucks!
The potential good news is the guy will open it, and have no idea what it is or what it's worth and hopefully drop it off on your doorstep.
I had a very similar thing happen to me. It was maybe FedEx or UPS and I got to see the signature that clearly wasn't mine, so I called and complained and a day or two later they redelivered it to me... Not sure if the original person called and let them know they delivered it to the wrong address or they went back to that person and got it back for me.
Just don't take no for an answer from USPS.
On the flip side, a friend of mine had a black powder revolver(!) delivered to his doorstep while he was not home. He did his due diligence to find the rightful owner, the address on the label didn't actually exist and the name wasn't in the white pages... slow to load, but fun to shoot!

Umm, isn't forging your signature illegal? And, this some sort of mail fraud? make the beast with two backs it, call the cops. At least get a case # (since that's about all you should get). and take that to the PO. Say there's a open police investigation. Talk to the Postal inspector.
No?

Best thing you couldv'e done is call Your bank and stop the payment. I'm a shipping manager for a Stainless Company and mail carriers pretty much use the signature as a binding contract. Since you have proof that you where not in town you could your can probably convince your bank to refund your money. If you can't,at least file a claim against usps. It's a lengthy process but if you have proof that you where not the one to sign thenit might be possible to get the $500 insurance that was included on the package. Keep calling the PO to find out the who delivered the package and the actual address it was delivered to. Sorry to hear that man Hopfully someone signed for it not knowing it wasn't for them, but it's weird that they signed your name. Check with your neighbors.

My wife's business had the same UPS guy for 5 years. One day there was a new guy on the route and my wife asked what happened. He got fired for signing for a package that he delivered. This was also a long time customer and he thought he was doing them a favor as they were not in the office. You got to know, my wife does a lot of shipping as is alone in the office all day. The only person she sees is the mail man and UPS guy, so they do build a "relationship."
Anyhoo, Sucks that they are giving you such a hard time about it.

Hey all,
Happy ending to this story (for me, not the mailman). They found the package, but wouldn't tell me where nor explain why it was signed for. I got a call from a manager at the local PO and they said that they had a sit down with my carrier. He remembered the package and admitted signing for it, stating he was 'in a hurry' and just didn't have time to come to my door and all the other parcel boxes were full.
I asked them if it was standard policy for my mail carrier to sign my name without my consent. She indicated that he would get some kind of slap on the wrist, but wouldn't really acknowledge what a castostrophic cluster mess he'd caused or that a law was violated.
At any rate, I got my damn damper and it's in cherry condition so I am grateful for that.
Thanks for all the support. Guess I'll be sure to request UPS or FEDEx from now on!

UPS delivers to where I work, and packages showed up and no one signed for them. When questionsed, the UPS guy (WHo delivers regularly and knows our name) signed one of our names cause he 'couldn't find us' when he delivered). Guess their schedule is so tight, they sign whomever they can remember. Not saying it's right, just that it happens.
We consider it a binding contract. We ship UPS, and instead of a customer's signature, I print the UPS signature page as proof of receivership, so we charge them. Wouldn't I feel stupid if I'm charging customers because of their "extra helpful, but too busy to find the right people' delivery man signs for the package.

Actually, UPS Drivers are
NOT
supposed to sign customer's signatures. It can lead to termination of employment if they are caught doing so.
