regulator/rectifier problem

I assume a smoking one after a 2 mile ride is definitely a problem. 2000 M750 with 39Kmiles. Had a problem keeping the battery charged towards the end of last winter and now the beginning of this over sustained cold days. It's stopped smoking and the bike will start. All electrics seem to work.

Buy a used one and plug and play or deeper problem?

As always, thanks in advance.

Check the connector. They are prone to corrosion which can then cause the RR to fail. It's a common problem and a simple fix. I bought a used one. You could also upgrade to a mosfet RR.

That's the magic smoke that's escaped.

I've fitted an Electrosport ESR439 to a Sport 1000 that had a disturbing appetite for RR's.
Not out of the woods yet, as it's only been in for 3 months.

I chatted with the guy at Electrosport and he said that was the best upgrade that would fit.
It has a slightly more robust 3-wire connector as well, I think that's part of the package.
Confirm that with them before buying.

I found where the mystery smoke was coming from.

That's the connection from the ignition switch. Is it suppose to lie behind the rectifier/regulator?

the R/R connectors looked ok except for this one

and the rest of the hot messy

Once I saw what was what, I reconnected the R/R just to see if the ignition connection was the culprit, but no power. Does the R/R need to be grounded to the frame to function?

and sorry for the crappy pics, dig camera is down and my phone suxs.

I don't think it has to be grounded for the bike to get battery voltage.

If the ignition was plugged in I'd sooner suspect a bad connection in that fried connector, or a bad wire from it.

The three fat yellow wires go to the stator, including the burnt connector in your photo.  The two red wires are from the 40 amp fuse.  The two black wires are ground.  The body of the regulator does not need to be grounded to work since you have ground wires, but good contact is needed to help the regulator shed heat.  The connection to the stator needs to be cut back until you get to good copper.  If your question is should that other connector should have been crushed under the regulator the answer is no.  That will also need repair.  I will look at my bike later and see if I can find that connector without taking the bike apart.

I would repair all connections first, then test.  I would be at least a little surprised if the regulator survived though.

Oh, for a wiring diagram go here  http://www.ducatiusa.com/services/maintenance/index.do  The manuals only go back to 2001, but, except for the addition of a tach all should be the same.

Our resident electrical engineer SuzyJ recommends a replacement Shindengen  MOSFET type of regulator, here's a link to a thread:

I don't know how it compares to an Electrosport regulator or if the Electrosport version is a MOSFET type.

Rick's is MOSFET  http://ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/rectifier-regulators  As good as Shindengen?  Dunno.

Do you have a wiring diagram?

I've got a M750 scanned manual full OCR, so I'm good on that point.

I'm thinking I'll go with this

http://www.rmstator.com/en/catalog-years/2000/ducati/750-monster/mosfet-regulator-rectifier-rm30504h

since I'll kill two birds, it including the harness side connectors with it.

Suggestions on the replacing the melted ignition switch connection?
