I have a thing about backpacks. When I say that, it means I'm always looking for the perfect backpack, one that I can use for everything, no matter the destination or packing needs. Of course this doesn't exist, like talking unicorns. In my… [ more ]

You have many backpaks  ;D How do you find the Kriega for a non motorcycling activities, like backpacking or hiking?

I haven't really used it beyond the bike, other than like walking into the office.  I think without a jacket on I would have trouble adjusting the straps tight enough and it wouldn't fit right.  Plus you pretty much have to have the harness buckled for it to sit right.  Without it buckled, the harness is up around my shoulders and the pack slides pretty low down my back.

that or I have it adjusted completely wrong, despite following the instructions.

Thanks Andy. I want to buy a backpack for hiking and travelling (not travelling on a motorcylcle) and I thought about getting a Kriega, but perhaps it's designed to work best as a backpack for motorcylist not for hikers. Thanks again.

You might consider something like the AGV I mention in there.  It has the advantage of having a helmet holder built in so you can strap your helmet on without it whacking you in the thighs, dangling from something, and leaves your hands free.  I think Cortech makes something similar.

When I wear a backpack riding, which isn't that often, I use my Burton snowboard backpack. It has a waist strap and a chest strap to keep everything in place and it's designed to be fairly aerodynamic. It works pretty good, wouldn't be able to hold a helmet off the bike though.

I used to commute to work and a Swiss Army backpack, like those they sell at Target, was comfortable and secure. I didn't feel the need to get a specialized one.

I've found 'regular' backpacks work pretty good if I'm not carrying much.  Once the load gets heavier is when i really noticed the difference.  Just curious, how much do/did you carry in the swiss army?

Mostly work related items, laptop, some books, chargers, etc. Not too heavy most of the time. The times I went on a long ride, I would strap a bag to the bike.

I just recently started using my kriega R15 for hiking, with the hydrapak installed... even though the straps were set for wearing over my moto jacket, it wasn't uncomfortable at all on the hike.  I also use it day to day, even if I'm off the moto.

when riding, it's plenty good for small trips to the store (I can fit two bottles of wine in it! what else matters?). it's seriously good gear.

I've been using this for commuting on my bike:

the new kriega has a beautiful strap system which keeps the

They look great, but I'm not sure I would be willing to pay $100+ for a backpack.

Ogio no drag pack.

+1

Love mine. My co workers call it my turtle shell. I've used various northface packs in the past and the ogio is much better for my use. It is a bit pricey, but it's been worth the premium.
