696 mirrors

Alright, so yesterday i sucked it up and rode to work through LA morning traffic, on the freeways, and all that jazz...

90mph seems really fast when you don't have a hood in front of you.  And i was amazed at how much squiggle was happening with all the wind and sh*ty road surface down here.  But i kept my knees pinched, and arms loose, so i didn't have any real problems.

EXCEPT for my mirrors... For the first thing... they're pretty much unusable for me (maybe i'm too tall?)  In the position the bike came in, i was looking at the ground under my foot.  I'd played with adjusting the glass... with no real benefit... but hadn't pulled out the allen wrench to adjust the arms.

I was on surface streets, making my way to the highway... when i noticed that the right mirror was slapping my forearm.  Hrm.... here's my chance to adjust that arm.

I pull over, pull the seat, grab the tools, put the arm much more forward to where i think i may actually be able to see behind me (still didn't work) adjust the left mirror much the same.  Pack it up, hit the highway... and halfway to work i'm getting slapped in the forearm again.

Once there, i tighten that sucker back up...

then on the ride home the left one starts slapping me.

Anyone else having this issue?  Any solutions/ suggestions?  Other than locktite?  I don't really want to use that until i find the spot that actually helps me see ANYTHING behind me.

Anyone have some cool mirrors that wouldn't clash with the 696 styling? (i think bar ends are out, i want to keep the ability to lane split)

thanks, z

I had the same thing happen to me but after really cranking it down it was okay.  Question though: did your stock tool set have the right allen wrench?  Mine didn't - I had to add one in for the mirrors.

I replaced my mirrors with these which I just got today, so they aren't even on my bike yet.  The stock mirrors look like they would snap off fairly easy.  =(

I had the same problem until I used the stock allen wrench to really screw that sucker in there. Now its perfect. I'm 5'5" and the mirrors are perfect for me. I can really see well with them.

Yup, it had the right size in there.  I cranked the snot out of both of them after the second time the right side slipped... that's why it blew me away when the left decided to join the fun.

I had that problem too, but tightening that sucker down real good worked.  My tool set didn't have the right size allen wrench either but I got a metric multi wrench set that I stuck in there with the stock set.  I haven't had any problems with it since.  I would imagine that you shouldn't play with moving them too much without tightening them back though.  That would make them start slapping your arms while driving.

Blue locktite and crankedem down and never an issue. They actually work pretty damn good.

i was riding a couple of days after picking up the bike noticing all the yellow paint they use after checking bolts.  they had it on every bolt except that one.  sure enough, about half a mile later, mirror started flapping.

torqued it down, no problem

i find the mirror to be pretty functional
ymmv

I think those would go pretty good with the 696 design :

Bar end are out....pfff...lane splitting is !

ArguZ,
Stop thread crapping on the guys thread asking for feedback/help regarding his mirror on the 696.
You're not any help at all, so as most of your post here at DMF.
I really can't say what I wanted to say so I rather notify the Mods regarding your post.

Same problem for the first few weeks. My toolkit did not have the correct allen wrench but i grabbed one from my tools at home and stuck it in there for emergency use. I also used some loctite on it and it stays in great.

I am 5'11" and the mirrors work great for normal use. But, they stick out there like a sore thumb (mickey mouse style). Definitely changing them soon.

Dont know what I am going to go with just yet.

just an fyi. I had this same problem so I cranked down on the bolts, and ended up cracking the damn bolt connector!!!!!!!!!!! SO my advice is not to torque it down, just loctite it.
