I was on a long ride the past couple of days.  On Sunday, coming home, we were driving up to Newcomb's Ranch and it was getting pretty cool.  Maybe 60 degrees out.  The tach started going nuts, needle jumping several thousand RPM up and down the last couple of hours of the ride, even after we came out of the mountains.

Any thoughts on what this could be?  I don't see anything obviously loose.

Thanks for any leads.

needle's loose.  happens a lot on these.  open it up and reseat the needle.  i put a drop of glue on mine.  6 years later, all good.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Cool, thanks!  I think they address disassembly in the manual.  Already pulled the gauges off and apart to replace bulbs once.

[popcorn]... wait this happened to me too ... I thought it was the dreaded ECU going  [shot]... but it might have been a low battery  [coffee] OR the little wire connected at the bottom of the bike (common problem) just re crimp ... and presto ....never had a problem again  [Dolph]...cant remember which fixed it ... let us know ... Well, I found a thread here about opening up the tach by cutting the top of the case.  Was by Santa Barbara Ducati Saturday and spoke to the chief mechanic and he confirmed that you have to open the tach, it can't be easily disassembled.  He recommended trying to cut around the bezel with a thin sharp blade.  I tried that and could not get the glue loose so I cut the top of the tach off and opened it up.  The needle was not loose.  I did not see anything obviously wrong inside.  So I glued it back together and will mount it and see if it works.

If not, the search goes on for the cause of this odd malady.  I will check for a loose wire on the frame.

Mine was doing this awhile back - I tightened two brass screws on the back of the thing and problem was solved.  Don't know if the ie tach is the same as the carbies; my tach is the same for 750/900's (Ducati Performance).
