Problems with a new gas tank install.

It's been several years since the accident, and I'm finally getting back in the game...

The final stage in the process has been to replaced the stock gas tank with a restored carbon fibre tank on my 2007 S2R 1000, but  she won't run...

I can hear the pump when I turn the key, and she's trying hard to turn over, but nothing beyond that. It ran fine with the stock tank.

Did I miss something obvious from the more experienced eye?

Your OEM tank has a fuel pressure regulator as part of the fuel flange assembly.

Does the 'new' carbon tank use your same fuel flange assembly?

Thank you for taking the time to help me out on this one - it is very much appreciated.

To answer your question, the flange assembly is very different between the two tanks. While I fitted the 'new'  tank with a Cycleworks Hi-Pressure EFI Fuel Pump, and a float assembly from LT... but no regulator. (chalk it up to another thing learned...)

Is there some way to install a pressure regulator on this tank and get it running?

You'll need a housing, something like this :



And the regulator itself:



Installed into the fuel return line, between the injectors and the fuel tank.

Here's the one on my '02 S4, I relocated it from the stock position, but for reference:



You could use most any FP regulator that's set for 45 psi (3 bar) and is high enough flow capacity.

There's lots of car units available, but they're usually car sized....

Thanks again! I'm breathing a sigh of relief at this point.  I'm finding a few 3bar regulators out there, and will likely hit up my local shop to see what they've got in stock.

Hate to ask... but, would you happen to know off hand the barb size?

The Ducati ones I've seen are for 5/16" (8mm) inner diameter hose.

I suspect that all of the Ducati external FP regulators are the same, so 851, 888, all steel-tanked Monster ie models, all SuperSport ie models.

First pic I found Googling, I thought just representative, but it appears to be the part in question.

I imagine there's Fiats or Alfas that have the same unit.

Just wanted to provide a quick update. Was able to get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator of eBay, and upgraded the cheap gauge it came with to a fluid filled version.

Had to dial it in with a gas tester, and adjust the air intake a bit to balance it out... but I can't get over the improvement.  Once I figure out how to post photos, I'll have to share the final product. She's perfect.

Glad you got it sorted out. I had the same issue putting a steel tank on my s2r1000. Should have updated the gas tank thread,......don't think I remembered...
