Restackor re-visited

Good morning, all.

It is with some embaressment I return to the Restackor topic. I started with Restackor over a year ago but for various reasons I never got really started. I think I have it running now, but the needle geometry part still has me puzzled.

The Restackor manua says the following:

Setting d.bleed and MAX.clks to zero triggers ReStackor to look for and read the clicker needle geometry table. The table must be located at C:\ReStackor\Work_Dir\clkdat.in.

Additionally, Speeddog gave me the answer / info below:

You should find it stored here:
Drive (C or whatever you use) / Restackor / Work_Dir / clickdat.in
The ".in" file extension is crucial when you make your own clickdat file
This is what I use for the OEM Showa compression valve:
Showa compression valve needle

3.0
Nclk   Dclk[mm]
0      3.0
24     2.52

I've got a seperate folder that I created for putting those files in.
I've got that one saved as a .txt file.
If you open it in NotePad, then do 'save as', enter the name as clickdat.in, *and* Change 'Save as type' to 'All Files' not 'Text Documents', it'll save it as clickdat.in, and the program will use it.

Of course, you have to replace the clickdat file in the above directory with your new one.
And IIRC, you have to have Restackor shut down, then restart after you change the file.

When I look in the Restackor folder, there is a sub-folder called Work_Dir, containing a further sub-folder Mid-Valve.
In the Work_Dir folder, there are several files, among other one called clkdat, and another one called clkdat.in; both these are empty, type designation IN-file, and are non-openable.

What I don't get is how I create the clicker geometry table (do I make my own excel file; the restackor manual does not explicitly say); and where I store this file (do I make a new subfolder in the Work_Dir folder)?

I feel a bit embarrassed to ask about this, since Speeddog and others seem to have worked it out, but I'll have to live with that ..... :-[

It's probably been almost as long since I did anything with Restackor.

Let me see what I can retrieve.

I created a folder 'Showa Compression' in the 'ReCalcs' folder.

I created a text file, 'clkdat-showa_compression', using Notepad, and saved it as a .txt file in the folder 'Showa Compression'.

The entire contents of the text file was :

Showa compression valve needle
3.0
Nclk   Dclk[mm]
0      3.0
20     2.6

With this, I have a file with a descriptive name, easy to keep track of, in a folder that the program doesn't access.

Then, from within Notepad, click 'file', click 'save as', fill in the name 'clkdat.in', specifying the 'save as type' as 'All Files', then click 'save'.
Essentially just making a copy of 'clkdat-showa_compression.txt' as clkdat.in.

Then I copy that over into the 'Work_Dir' folder.

Then re-start ReStackor.

Hope that helps.
Don't worry, I blundered around for quite a while before I figured it out.

I've found this kind of feature somewhat common in many arenas.
Like a cool electronic device from a small manufacturer, it does neat stuff, but it's packaged in a grotty little plastic box with no mounting provisions whatsoever.
They're so physically or economically exhausted by the time they get all the hardware and software done that they just can't finish it off properly.
So you have to resort to silly methods like zipties or velcro.

Thanks, Speeddog, that should do it even for me.

I assume you had a look at the "needle" and decided that the numbers you used were a good enough approximation of the slightly-tapered-then-straight blunt shape of the needle Showa uses?

The top of the M8 adjuster screw will seal against the flat bottom of the base valve holder when the adjuster is fully closed; I suppose it will also cause some pretty different throttling than would a straight tapered needle simply clickered into the oil passage in the base valve holder until it gets too big for the hole. I suppose I'll ignore that as well .....  [roll]

I took fairly accurate measurements of the needle and hole, thread pitch and number of clicks per turn.

I suspect it's far more accurate at '15 clicks' than at '1 click', but the way I see it, ReStackor is a comparison tool at best.
