To buy or not to buy S2R1000??

I want to upgrade from my 03 620ie Monster to something bigger now I have my full license (I am now 47 and had to go through the L's and then P's thing for for 1 year).
The Monster I have is in great nick (paint wise, mechanically etc needs nothing), and now I have taken the restrictor off it is a completely different bike to ride.
I looked at and took for a ride a 2006 S2R1000 that goes like a 'cut snake' and has obviously been ridden alot! The downsides are the Owner resprayed it as he didn't like the original color (black and silver) in Blue with a white stripe with runs now in the paint. The frame also has a lot of chips etc and would need respraying. It comes with Books, Code Card, the Red and Black Keys.
The thing that mainly concerns me is the Instrument Cluster has been replaced which is now only showing 4,300 km's. I have no way of verifying the original km's other than what the Owner has told me (he advised it has now done 40,000 km's). He also said it was purchased by himself from a friend who owned it since new for the 'right price' who had owned it since new, that's why it is so cheap. Did a PPSR check, and no records of previous damage,, Stolen, Money owing etc. The bike actually shows up as an 05 Model (not 06, but probably first Registered in 06) and the original colors of black and silver as he stated show up as well. Motor looks a little grubby(as is the chain, but not worn) and back swing arm anodizing is a bit ordinary. It is registered, has good tyres and as I said earlier rides fine.
Like myself, the Guy is around 50, and seems like a nice Bloke. He does have other Ducati's and seems genuine enough!
Rather than 'waffle on' too much, I can undertake re-doing the paint work myself no dramas. He said the Belts have also been changed (by himself) about 4,000k's ago, and the oil has been done every 2,000 km's (The Speedo is now displaying 'MAINT' now when the ignition is turned on').
Would it be worth around the $6,000 mark being asked for it (cheap for an S2R 1000 I know, that's what worries me) or should I keep on looking and stick with my trusty 620 for a while??
A heap to take in I know, but any advice (good or bad) would be appreciated?
Cheers

Rastas
Check out whats on bikesales.com.au not sure which city your from but there is a clean one in Sydney with low Ks
for a fair price , its been on long enough for the vendor to consider lower offers.
Sounds like that one is a little rough , 40k is about right for that year but the re spray and care taken of it
sounds a bit hap hazard.
They are now quite a sort after bike , old school looks 2V motor with heaps of grunt ,easier and cheaper to service sound better than the 4V motor.
Or offer him a super low ball offer and hunt down a new tank/fairing combo to replace and start cleaning.
To re spray the frame would be too expensive unless you do the strip down a lot of labour cost , having all the keys etc is a bonus.
What other goodies does it have ,pipes/bling ?

Thanks Two Dogs.
The respray and stripping part doesn't bother me, as I am a Panel Beater/ Spray Painter anyway so Labour wouldn't be an issue.
It has Ceramic Coated exhausts with 'cored' mufflers (it sounds great).
Has a steering Damper fitted (I don't know if this was standard or not), Carbon Fibre belt covers, & Carbon Fibre front guard and rear hugger.
Just the lack of confirmed K's and being a bit tatty is what concerned me.
It sounds like maybe I should keep on looking!
By the way I live in Northern NSW near Tweed Heads and I would have really liked (if they weren't do damn expensive) a GT1000 Sports Classic!!
Cheers Again

it's a buyers market mate, there's plenty of good bikes out there, and at bargain prices too, no reason to settle for less than you want condition wise and if you're uneasy about it now you will always regret buying it.
keep looking, you will find the right bike in time, in the mean time you have your derestricted monster to ride, so all's good.

There are a couple of S2R's on gumtree around Burleigh/Goldcoast plus that one that you looked at.
Here is one of them, but go and check them both out if they interest you

What the hell is wrong with the Silver and Black? Personally I think he has devalued the bike (further) by painting it as there were not many silver/black. Or maybe I am just being overly biased?
Oh yeah it would have a dry clutch so check the plates/basket for wear. You could be up for an additional $500-$600 to replace that!
I remember seeing an silver/black S2R1000 on Fleabay a little while back in WA - had 16000km on it, full termis, chip +dyno, WASP air cleaners, great condition, all for the low price of $10k. Seriously considered buying it, if it wasn't in WA...
Like pointed out previously - it is a buyers market and you can pick something blinged up with less kms for good money.
I am not letting go of my S2R for love or money. Great bike, termis are nice. Ever comes a day of me buying a Diavel, I will put the Monsters to the back of the shed under covers. I love the 2V air cooled motor and dry clutch.

You also have to think about explaining the questionable service history when you come to selling it. All the buying advice for Ducati's includes getting a full service history so its going to be worth less without one.
