it's funny on the battery.

all my friends who had previously used regular phones complained about it
all my friends who had previously used smart phones loved it

i thought it was better than my laptop, so i was happy

It's considerably faster. If you run on wi-fi all the time, then it's not that impressive.

In your opinion, is it worth the extra $10 per month and the loss of text messages (well, included text that is)?

You add GPS, and faster net, and that'd pretty much it as far as added features over a 1G with 2.0 upgrade right?

In my opinion no, but I'm in the minority. I work for AT&T and both iPhone launchs have created more work and worries than I care to admit. So I have personal issues to deal with. If you have the first gen iPhone I would suggest waiting for the 2nd gen to lower in price or wait for the 3rd gen that should be sick.

Not yet, but I presume it's going to be smaller with better video capabilities.

Funny, I was sitting at lunch with a buddy who has the 1st gen phone. We compared signals - I had 1bar, he had 3 and he was able to load web pages faster on the older network.

3G doesn't have the full coverage that its predessor has.  ???

BTW I'm in Denver, not in the boonies.

On a side note, I pre-ordered at AT&T and am awaiting delivery. Was able to walk into Apple today, and they had some in. Wondering if I'll still be able to get the one at AT&T?

I ordered mine from an AT&T store on the 11th and it came in yesterday.  I picked it up last night, ported my number over no problem and so far I'm loving it.

you wont be able to do both Munch... they will check your account to see it was already activated.

So I got my phone last night.   So far I think I wasted my money.  This isnt any faster to me than the original and the GPS is a joke....it updates as fast as the tower triangulation did.  Rip off so far.

Add to that an $18 "upgrade" charge and a 10% restocking fee when you find out that it is a POS...   [bang]

Bottom line...if you have the old iphone, keep it and upgrade the OS that just came out.  You arent missing a damn thing
If you love your bike, set it free.
If it comes back to you, you've
probably high-sided.

I can't speak for the old iPhone cause I never had one, but my 3G is MUCH faster than my BB was on the EDGE network.  Maybe Los Angeles has better coverage?  I dunno.  Also, with the old triangulation, it was very inaccurate, whereas I find the GPS to be both fast and incredibly accurate.

That said, if I had an old iPhone, I probably wouldn't have upgraded, but since I didn't I couldn't be happier.

Has anyone with an old iphone ever tried the external batteries?

There's a few 'mods' that you can attach an external battery to the phone: http://news.bostonherald.com/business/technology/reviews/view/2008_07_24_Battery_choices_are_limited_for_iPhones/srvc=home&position=7

I'm thinking about getting the new iphone, but I'm real worried about the battery life.

Yeah, except for those of us who don't have EDGE networks to connect too and have to subsist on GPRS on a 1st gen. I'm pretty happy with the money I spent for the 3G one.
