I've been very happy so far, that is, until I realized I'm not getting text messages from anyone not on AT&T.  I called AT&T and everything is ok with my account and I get texts from other AT&T customers.  I googled the problem and found a few people experiencing similar problems and people online say that it's because I ported a number from a different carrier that it could take the SMS servers a few days to realize the number has been ported.  I'm hoping thats what the issue is.

The same thing happened to me when I ported from Verizon to AT&T. It took them about 3 weeks to fix the problem.

That's reassuring.   :(

Did they give you the same story that it wasn't a problem on their end?

Absolutely. Fortunately, I still had my Verizon phone. I turned it on and about 20 text messages came through. Once I told them that, they realized they forgot to port the data portion of it. I was ballin' walking around with 2 phones for a week.

Good Luck!

Funny, I was sitting at lunch with a buddy who has the 1st gen phone. We compared signals - I had 1bar, he had 3 and he was able to load web pages faster on the older network.

3G doesn't have the full coverage that its predessor has.  ???

I've had a 1G iPhone since June last year and my signal strength was the same through every firmware upgrade until this last 2.0 one. After I upgraded to the 2.0 the signal is significantly lower and sometimes I have no signal at all. There is a 2.1 version already released to developers and I truly hope that it fixes this issue.

Are you _only_ noticing differences in what the signal strength meter is saying, or are you actually experiencing less real world performance than the old one?

If anything, my gut feel says my new 3G one gets marginally better (phone) reception in poor signal areas, but I gotta admit I almost never look at the signal strength meter so I've got no idea whether it's _displaying_ any differently...

I've had AT&T for more than 3 years now and prior to the iphone I had a motorola Razor. The signal strength of the razor was poor in my house (still at the same house today) but when I bought the iPhone last year, I noticed that I had better reception and fewer dropped calls. I updated through every firmware and the signal strength was never affected. Until now. With 2.0 I drop calls in my house like when I was using the motorola razor. My buddy updated his 1st gen iphone to the 2.0 and he has noticed the same thing. The only reason why I haven't downgraded the firmware yet to solve this issue is because the 2.1 will be released soon to the general public and that SHOULD fix it.

Good article by the way..

I've tried to get one now for 2 straight days here in NYC.  I've got one of the flagship Apple stores about 6 blocks from my office.  Last night - lines throughout the store and out on 5th Avenue.

This morning, I learn the actual "How to buy an iPhone" process.

Well, you stand in line for a voucher.  The voucher tells you what day and what time to come back to buy your iPhone.  While you get your voucher, you get pre-approved by AT&T for the phone service.

Then when it comes to your time and day, you wait in line for the phone, then wait in line for service activation.

I gave up when I heard the words "stand in line" [bang] [bang] [bang] promptly walked to my office.

I can wait. [popcorn]

Or you could just order one from AT&T and they'll call you when it's delivered to the store.  Then all you have to do is go to the store to pick it up and activate it at the store.

Yeah, like I said upthread, they're a nice phone, but they aren't worth waiting in line for...

I was amazed people were still queuing up here in Sydney the day after they went on sale - I'm flabergasted that people are waiting in line for a phone that's been available for 3 weeks now!

How about you copy and paste a note about how much better an iphone is than anything else?  Should be pretty easy to do...

So stupid me plays the game and gets the voucher at 6:50 am this morning.  I go back at 8:30.  At 9:55 I'm walking back to my office with a new iPhone 8)!!!!

1 hour and 14 minutes later I'm walking back to return it.

NOWHERE in Apple documentation does it say it doesn't work AT ALL with MS Windows 2000...

The 3G iPhone is completely worthless to me if I can't sync it to my computer at work.

Since I ported my number, getting my current phone and service to work again has resulted in a) a new 1 year contract 2) a phone that doesn't work - yet and 3) the horrible feeling like I landed a date with a supermodel - and she got up from dinner to go to the bathroom - and never came back. :-\.

I returned mine because the documentation didn't say that it would not cook my breakfast and wash my bike. There was a whole lot of stuff that manual didn't say it wouldn't do.   >:(
