yeah, i guess this is my point.  if i didn't already have the 1st gen, i'd buy the new one, but the addition of 3g internet and GPS isn't enough to make me upgrade.

this is, by the way, the reason i liked the platform to begin with.  most upgrades are software, so as far as i'm concerned, i have the new one.... it's all about the OS for me.

glad they fixed the crappy speaker phone though.
If I were in your boat, I would do the same.  I waited for a year knowing that this was coming pretty soon and just stuck it out with my BB (terrible OS btw) until the 3g was released.

If you own a 1st generation unit, sell it. You'll clear $300, which allows you to get the 16GB 3G unit.

For some reason, people on craigs and ebay are still buying them like nuts - afraid of a 2 year contract apparently.

I just sold mine yesterday.

Yeah, the email was great.  However, since I develop in OS X and (obviously) use it in my private life, the contacts/calendar syncing is much better on the iPhone for me.  Plus, the calendar UI on the BB is the ugliest I've ever seen.

Agreed, GPS would be nice, but not really that great. I mean, I already have a perfect googlemap in front of me that I can zoom and stuff with, so what else could I need? I'm not stupid, I know where I am... and if I didn't, I'd look at the next street sign. Turn by turn directions are for girls. You should be able to look at a map and figure out where you are going from that alone. Besides, we have no business staring down at our phones while we drive waiting for the next direction to pop up --watch the road!

You know, it's funny you say that, because it's only my male coworkers that depend on GPS, and it drives me crazy.  I can usually find the place on my own while they are still busy programming the address into their GPS. [roll]

Can you send an MMS?
I don't know if you're asking me, but no I can't.  I can however email pics easily form the phone, which is fine for me since I've never used MMS even on phones that supported it.

+1.

I used to find most of my friends that I sent MMS's to from my old Nokia ended up having to view them online anyway - I use an appthat lets me uload straight from the phone to Flickr - I reckon it's way more useful (to me and my circle of friends) than MMS...

the big drawback with the lack of MMS is that if someone sends you something over MMS you don't get it.  as far as i can tell, i never even get a notification that something was sent to me

MMS is a very basic function on just about any camera phone. My wife sends me MMS all the time. I think you can be innovative without having to comprimise what is considered to be basic functionality.

I believe you're supposed to get a message notifying you that you've been sent a picture message and you then have to go to a website and put in a username and password to see the pic.

I think it's the idea of the MMS is what apple doesn't want to support.  Cell companies over charging for data...  MMS is an email with a jpeg, something (when you have a data plan) you can do for free.

MMS is still around to take from your pocket, and with unlimited data plans, its just wrong.  Someone has to step up to stay no more, and in a couple of years I bet we see them die.  (Along with text, I cant believe they charge you for a couple of bytes.)

Apple did it will the floppy drive.  They did it with the stupid pen and a touch screen.  Hopefully will do it soon when standard harddrives go away.  And hopefully CD/DVD burners altogether.  (Just a stupid form of retarded media, IMO)

Email and IM.  Way to be.  I tell people who reg MMS me to send it to my email instead of my phone number, works well.

agreed entirely.  with every point.  but so long as 90% of my friends don't have email and do have MMS on their phones, it's not going to happen.

I just sold mine yesterday.

When the first iPhone came out, I had my my managers from India in town in San Francisco for a meeting. They picked up a bunch for their team members, which I thought was pretty crazy. I mean, $400 is a lot of money in Bangalore. I was told yesterday that they sold their phones for $500 each to people who will not use the carrier that offers the new iPhone.  [clap]

You sound bitter. Did Mr Jobs hurt your feelings? Did he touch you in inappropiate places?

Ya, I sort of am. Mostly I'm just disappointed. The original iPhone was an amazing, groundbreaking release. It was (and still is) hugely better than any other phone out there, so much that even clones being released over a year later don't come close. How could I not get my hopes up for the upgraded version? I wanted another amazing, groundbreaking release --one that would be just as huge a leap forward relative to the first iPhone as the first iPhone was to everything else. What we got was a modest improvement, which although it would certainly be nice to have, unfortunately comes with a huge increase in monthly cost.

This is the reason first generation iphones still sell for up to $700 on Ebay (if unlocked). Even now, they are the best phones you can get from anywhere that can be used for a reasonable monthly price.

There are exceptions to every rule (girls with Ducatis probably are exceptions to lots of them), but I stand by what I said about girls and directions.  It's a generalization and nothing more. ;D

Apple is famous for launching great technology and then sitting back filling their pockets. Once they get more competition, they come up with something better. Happened with the iPod.

For now.  As soon as the hype dies down a bit, AT&T will be selling iPhone 3Gs for 599 with no contract, then you can take that to T-Mobile or wherever you like (well in the US only T-Mobile cause of the network compatibility).
