I'd buy the iPhone 3g in a second if not for that fact that you need to use it on AT&T. That company is ridiculous, and I can't justify a 2-year contract with them. Lets compare my current iPhone with the 3G iPhone:

My Current iPhone on T-mobile:

1000 minutes for $39.99 (promotional plan from years ago)
Unlimited data for $5.99 (EDGE speeds, using the T-zones hack)

The new iPhone:

900 minutes w/ rollover would be $59.99.
3G data costs $30 per month.

That's $45 more than I'm paying now to bump me up to the faster speed --which doesn't work inside big buildings or outside of the city... I'm usually on WIFI, anyway.

I get the 2.0 firmware free anyway, so all I'd be gaining is a THICKER (marketed as "thinner," despite the fact that it is simply not true) phone and intermittently faster internet for $45 more per month. Should I do it?  ???    (no)

I'm currently investigating whether a family plan and a government discount combined would make it a better deal. From what I found so far the answer there is no also, since they won't discount the data at all...
Aftermarket: RoadRacing modified under-engine exhaust, revalved 996 forks, ProCutting half-open clutch, CC triple and pressure plate, 999 clipons, BMC filter, CRG-LS mirrors, PC3, Rizoma rearsets, heated grips, +2 teeth in rear gearing, Veypor VR2 computer, MBP collets, Yoyodyne slave, Galfer waves front and rear, misc CF (mostly faded), CRG clutch/brake levers.

You'd also be getting GPS, which makes Google Maps, Yelp! and others 1000x better.  Plus, there's also the very real possibility that a turn-by-turn nav app will be coming soon using the GPS as well.

no way to justify the added monthly expense... plus you lose the 200 free texts with the new one
most bars have wifi, and that's the one place i find myself needing the internets the most
edge is fine for maps and such
GPS would be nice, but most of the time i don't navigate that way.  typically i look at the map and plot out the next hour or so in my head rather than use the turn by turn features.  the triangulation works well enough for that

Y'all just need to get a job that pays for your cell usage. My company ponies up for my cell and then people from work call me, email and text me 24 hours/day, 7 days...

my last company gave me a work cell, my boss asked why I didn't cancel my personal cell seeing as he would pay for any minutes used on my work cell.  As soon as I was done working for the day, my work cell would be turned off, that's why I kept my personal cell.

Agreed, GPS would be nice, but not really that great. I mean, I already have a perfect googlemap in front of me that I can zoom and stuff with, so what else could I need? I'm not stupid, I know where I am... and if I didn't, I'd look at the next street sign. Turn by turn directions are for girls. You should be able to look at a map and figure out where you are going from that alone. Besides, we have no business staring down at our phones while we drive waiting for the next direction to pop up --watch the road!

You sound bitter. Did Mr Jobs hurt your feelings? Did he touch you in inappropiate places?

If you travel a lot (for work or otherwise), the GPS comes in very handy - especially when used in conjunction with other apps.  Also, the turn-by-turn nav would use speakerphone and you wouldn't look at it any more than you look at a garmin or any other nav box.

clearly, you've never tried to carry on a speakerphone conversation with the iPhone.  that's the one part of the phone that is absolutely useless.  unless you're in a studio sound booth, you can't hear a thing on it.... maybe they fixed that on the new one.

on the upside, 2.0 OS is awesome.  appstore is great and finally delivers what this phone could've been all along... i.e., i'm currently listening to streaming live.fm on it over EDGE.

Do you have the new iPhone or the old iPhone?  The 3G has a better speakerphone which I've used more than a few times to carry on a conversation while driving.  is it the best one I've ever used?  No.  BUt it's certainly worked pretty well for me.

Can you send an MMS?

I don't know if you're asking me, but no I can't.  I can however email pics easily form the phone, which is fine for me since I've never used MMS even on phones that supported it.

plus...the car has GPS. If i'm walking i usually know where I'm going, or I have a map....and It's usually in the middle of no where, where google maps couldn't pull up because there is no cell reception

yeah, i guess this is my point.  if i didn't already have the 1st gen, i'd buy the new one, but the addition of 3g internet and GPS isn't enough to make me upgrade.

this is, by the way, the reason i liked the platform to begin with.  most upgrades are software, so as far as i'm concerned, i have the new one.... it's all about the OS for me.

glad they fixed the crappy speaker phone though.
