A link in my chain broke on my 01 900ie. The chain wound it's self around the front sprocket and I can only assume, pushed the swingarm which caused the left engine case to crack. A friend of mine has a 944 out of a ST2, would those cases be ok as replacements?

Why not use the whole bottom end?

Pretty sure they are. I know of no reason that set up won't bolt in to your 900.

The gearbox/primary gear  ratios might be different because I think the 01 M900 used the close ratio gearbox. Not sure about the ST. Brad's site has that info.

Either he or Speeddog should be by soon to confirm, or tell you I'm an idiot. ;)

Cool, she stripping it down today. Yes mine has the close ratio tranny, it's nice in town but not so much on the highway.

The shaft Brad was referring to runs the water pump on the ST.

You should be able to cut it off, like he said, and run your original alternator cover.

Yeah I was a little lost. The alt cover has to be replaced also, chain took a huge chunk out.

I suppose you could pull the impeller from the water pump and run the ST side cover with a dummy pump, or just pull the pump.

It would look kinda funky, but it would be functional.

You can also get a new/used cover.

Probably just go with a new cover. Any recommendations on what brand of chain? Oh, yes the ST has a "standard" ratio transmission.

Sorry to read about this.
I wonder if a case saver would have been any use in this instance?

mastershake

Not sure what year, might have found a 99 900ss bottom end instead. I'm not sure about the case saver, all the damage was from the chain balling up around the sprocket and pushing the swingarm away.
