Gear Selection Issue!

My '97 M900 isn't always engaging the gear when selecting up! It's only ever on the upwards selection, but occasionally when shifting from say forth to fifth it hits neutral (without neutral light showing).  Would this be a gear selector issue or gearbox issue?  And, what would the fix be?

Cheers  [thumbsup]

I'd hazard a guess and say selector issue.
shouldn't be to much of a drama...

You could be on to something, the bike is new to me and it's almost 18 years old, and after the strip down I think it's been ridden hard!

Try adjusting the shift lever down a little.  How to is in the owner's manual.  No manual?  Go here   http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do   Only goes back to 2001, but the adjustment method remained the same until the SRs

Also, make sure the clevis/clamp on the shaft itself isn't hitting the alternator cover on the upshift.

Ducatis have forever had issues with gear shifting if the bike isn't moving.

Thought I would tag on to this thread instead of starting a new one.

Never had any issues with gear selection but it has just developed a strange pre engagement click
The only way I can describe it is a slight click just before first is engaged , it is only subtle but
defiantly new .
Pre cursor to any issues anyone would care to suggest from experience or general knowledge of this area ?
Opinions would be greatly appreciated  [thumbsup]

Check that the bolts on both ball joints of the shifter mechanism are tight, I see them loose quite a lot.

If they seem OK, clean and grease them, and the shift lever pivot as well.

See if that helps.

If there's still an issue, pull the alternator cover, and see that the mechanism and springs are healthy, and haven't slipped out of adjustment.
