Hi

Sold my 696 to a friend of mine (hopefully she'll won't stop due to this issue)  When she first tries to cold start the bike with Choke on and fuel pump initialized and the engine does turnover but doesn't start/ignite but she waits a few minutes then try again, it will start at times and will ok until she stops for either a break or classes but she tries again, it won't start.  Went over today and check the bike out and do hear the fuel pump initialized and bike does cranks over at a normal rotation but no start even though the choke is full out.  So I took the choke off then twist the throttle about 1/4 turn and it started then I shut it off, put the choke back on and started each time afterwards.  Tend to wonder if she might have some bad fuel since it's been happening for the last 2 weeks and has a full tank of gas.  I suggested for her to get some fuel cleaner since we have ethanol here and hopefully the issue disappears.

What else can we do to resolve this issue?

Thanks

Just for fun, check the plugs, could be fouled from a rich mixture

The only thing I can say is maybe ONCE or TWICE in the 4 years we've owned it we've gone to start it cold and somehow seem to have flooded it. When that happens the only remedy was to come back in 10 minutes.

FWIW we were warned the fast idle/choke lever and the sequence in which you activate it is important (never confirmed that, but we stick by it).

1. Key on
2. Start switch to RUN
3. THEN actuate the fast idle lever.
4. Hit button

99% of the time our 11 696 has always roared to life then.

Yes, this too . . . NEVER PULL FAST IDLE LEVER BEFORE TURNING ON KEY, ECU will then measure that angle as 0° for the TB . . .

Ahhhh, so the ECM basically resets/relearns closed throttle voltage from the TPS at each boot up. THAT explains it...

Thanks!

YUP . . . ALL  Continental/Siemens-VDO ECUs do that . . . that's why there is NO TPS "manual" setting, with the OEM diag equipment, you can reset TPS . . .

I wonder why you can manually reset TPS with the software (like on Guzzis with the Weber-Marelli and a fixed-mounting TPS)?

I mean, if the ECM does it automatically every start-up, there wouldn't seem to be a need.

It is like telling the ECU "THIS IS 0" . . .

Yup, very familiar with the concept, but thanks.

It's just that on other motors with fixed mounted TPS you usually don't reset the TPS position with a scan roll unless something has been changed, a physical part, linkage, or sometimes after a remap (I think that erases learned tps voltage on a lot of ECUs).

So if the ECU resets at every start up it would seem redundant to have a scan tool reset function. Why would you ever have to use it?

That's all.
