HD sells replacement speedo/tach units - if you want a tach for some reason...  and they somehow have a procedure for them to learn the mileage from the old speedometer fwiw.

I like solution, if only it didn't involve besmirching my duc with HD parts.

I've used Trailtech speedos before. Be aware that their warning lights have been noted as being very dim in daylight. They did do a change a few years ago and went from incandescent to LED, but the LEDs they went with were marginally better. I ended up having to install brighter LEDs to replace those.

On the plus side, their speedometer, as verified by GPS, is very accurate.

One other item of note, is that their documentation does not provide instructions for transferring the bike's existing mileage to the display. That may or may not be a problem for an ATV? If it is, PM me and I might be able to help.

Thanks, I sent you a PM.  I was wanting to transfer the mileage but assumed there wasn't a way to do it.  ATV's don't fall under the Dept of Motor Vehicles jurisdiction, at least here in NV, so there shouldn't be any legal issue.

Careful Bob...it's a federal thing on odometer tampering.

Nate, for the record I looked up the federal law.  Per part (a) below I will be adjusting the mileage on the new odometer so that it remains the same as before the replacement.  All completely legal and also in compliance with common sense.

49 U.S. Code § 32704 - Service, repair, and replacement

(a) Adjusting Mileage.â€" A person may service, repair, or replace an odometer of a motor vehicle if the mileage registered by the odometer remains the same as before the service, repair, or replacement. If the mileage cannot remain the sameâ€"
(1) the person shall adjust the odometer to read zero; and
(2) the owner of the vehicle or agent of the owner shall attach a written notice to the left door frame of the vehicle specifying the mileage before the service, repair, or replacement and the date of the service, repair, or replacement.
(b) Removing or Altering Notice.â€" A person may not, with intent to defraud, remove or alter a notice attached to a motor vehicle as required by this section.

Ordered a Cateye brand bicycle odometer as my temporary fix, per Howie & D3via@nt suggestions.  We'll see how it goes.

That didn't work.  Bicycle design does not lend well, in particular the fact that the magnet is made to go around a spoke.  I don't have spoke wheels.

Will order a used ebay speedo sometime.  Can I just swap on into my console or is it a major project?

Couldn't you use a different magnet?

Yes, any magnet should work, but a rare earth type is better.  My "one size fits all" Trial Tech Vapor speedometer came with a couple of magnet configurations.  One magnet was just that, a magnet with no mounting bracket that you could epoxy wherever you found a good place for it. Mine ended up being about 3/8" away from the sensor and it works fine.

The magnet for my house alarm fell off the door.  I replaced it with a magnet from a hard drive.  Works fine. Duct tape will hold it on your wheel until you figure out something that is better.

Pretty much this Bob. My Spa tach/speedo came with a small neodymium magnet that's Devcon waterproof epoxied to a brake rotor bolt. Sensor is on the swing arm...been that way a long time. [thumbsup]

What do they use to adhere the weights for balancing wheels to the rim?

Two sided tape...like for carpets or auto moldings...

but it isn't forever.

Huh?  Where on the rotor?  How does it pass through the caliper?

You should be able to find a speedo (with the knob) on EBay.
