Hi...

So I have a 2006 Monster S2R.  Mostly stock... some things are starting to have issue though and I really need to replace that tank. Sad

Anyway, looking for easy/cheapish upgrades.  I can't do the work myself because I don't have tools/know about motorcycles (computer person- can rip those apart with no problem...)  I was wondering if it is possible to replace the lights in the headlight with LED?  Tailight?  (no I've not chopped it).

Thoughts?

I also want an Ohlins' rear shock but never see one when I actually have some money.

Not impossible, just look at your left, for our sponsors, take a look at their websites and you will find ALL you want at very competitive pricing . . .

Maybe you could score some "bartering deals" with them . . .

Someone here has already installed a LED headlight and I think, he was selling it, if I find the link I will post it . . .

If you do the rear suspension, you MUST do the front suspension, I would start with this mod before anything else, just my $0.02 . . .

What are the issues besides the tank?

An Ohlins or Penske shock would be good. Those companies have base model shocks that are quite good.

I take it the S4R front end upgrade included the braking package? I also found a radial master cylinder really gave excellent feel as well as power. The feel was the best part of the upgrade. My old M900 has the old style 4 pot callipers and 320mm discs standard and I added braided lines and a 999 master cylinder. Is the S4R front end set up for you?

What brake and clutch levers do you have?

I found my upgrade parts here in the parts for sale section. It made it more affordable.

Happy with your seat?

Need more oomph? Mapping, open airbox, etc?

Supposedly.  The rear shock I know NEEDS to be replaced.

My tank is warpped and I didn't get in on the tank replacements.  I will need to get a new one.  Hoping to take care of that in winter since that is going to put me back $1800.

That LED light is fantastic, but also quite expensive...

A good bulb in a modern housing (reflector!) works much better than stock.

Besides a metal tank with ~ extensive mods to make it work, there is an affordable alternative by California CycleWorks

As general advice - keep the mods to a minimum  Undecided Very easy to throw money into projects that ends up being difficult, more expensive than expected and in many cases not really required...

looking for easy/cheapish upgrades

I think she is asking about something like this ...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/30W-3000LM-6000K-CREE-XM-L2-LED-H4-9003-HB2-Motorcycle-Hi-Lo-Beam-HeadLight-Bulb/361185269820?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3Db7c8090705964e4e97ee72c562d8bdde%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D10%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D221577084532

Direct replacement of your existing H4 bulb.
While it is relatively cheap and easy mod, I don’t think this is the right option for OP.

1) As you can see in the eBay photo, the back of the “bulb” sticks out and has a quite a bit of bulk. (Heat sink and fan). Most probably this will not fit in stock Monster’s headlight bucket. Which means you will have to cut out the back of the bucket.
2) Until you fit this into your headlight and test it out, you can not tell if the beam pattern will work or not. It’s all about the lens cut and reflector design.  It may work wonderfully, or it can totally suck.

For the lighting upgrade, there’s tutorial thread.
http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=69572.0

Tail / brake light bulbs. Unless you actually have problem with the stock unit / bulb, I’d say leave it alone, save money and use it for something useful. (Such as rear shock.)

thanks for the input.

Part of the problem is I am such a techno-nerd that I want to modernize the bike somehow while keeping her lines.  If only I could do some sort of digital dashboard and bluetooth so I could know what is going on with the oil, fuel, etc...

Such a dork I am.

I can understand that feeling.
I used to have this one, until I bought S4R.

Back in the mid 90s, in the sea of CBR 600 F2 and F3, I built this from (pretty much bone stock) 1985 Kawasaki 750 turbo, with 1995 ZX-9R B2’s running gear, and a bit from here, a bit from there. (watch first Mad Max movie, if you haven’t.)

Wanted to retain the original look of the air cooled GPz, but wanted to run modern tires, brakes and suspension.
Back page of the Performance Bike (Reader’s Special) and Streetfighter magazine were huge influence on me , back then. (Oh, and Mad Max ...)
The craziness just kept on going and going ... adjustable waste gate (dial-a-boost kit), HKS blow-off pressure valve on serge tank, “modified ECU”, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, I even took the engine apart and rebuilt it with all new seals and bearings.

And I kept on putting gadgets like radar detector, air-fuel ratio monitor, the list goes on and on. I was even thinking about installing NOS kit, (I must have had Max’s intercepter and Knight 2000 somewhere back in my mind.)

... anyhow, yeah, I understand that feeling.

Good to see you are back working on the Dream  waytogo

Just a pointer on the CA Cycleworks replacement tank. They are unpaintable, it says it right on the page but it's easy to over look. These are excellent tanks that are immune  to the swelling of the stock tank, but the roto-molded plastic (think kayak) will not let paint adhere. I don't know if vinyl stickers will either. So it will make it difficult to stay tangerine
