Hello all,

Has anyone here spent time on the Hyperstrada/Hypermotard?  I'm 6' with a 33" inseam and am feeling cramped on my Monster 821. Around town and for my 9 mile commute, the bike is good. It's the longer rides and HEAT that bothers me. Lower back, hips, knees, ankles (rear sets push heels out... poor design) ache after most rides longer than an hour. Also, after stopping for 30 seconds the heat that scorches your inner thighs before billowing up is rough, especially in this Houston summer.

It's a little frustrating knowing that I test rode the M796, M1100evo and Speed Triple before committing to the M821. I was set on the Monster idea the past 5 years and finally a bought the M821 in March. The HS/HM wasn't even on my radar, unfortunately. Now 2000+ miles later I'm having second thoughts even though this bike still brings a grin to my face.

Also, this isn't a "one bike for every occasion" type of advice I'm seeking. I'm seeking your perspective since I have a WR250F for hare scrambles/trail riding and planning on a ADV bike, (F800gs) in the next 6 months. I just want the right tool for the job.

Overall, I'm a big believer in the 821 platform, I just feel I may be on the wrong bike.  What say you guys? Any advice you can give me on keeping it or selling/trading it?  Any insight on the HS/HM that would detract from such move? I definitely need to test ride the Hyper too...

I'll probably take a bath trading it...

Your assessment of the 821 is exactly why I wont buy a new monster. I test rode a diavel and streetfightern848...the diavel was impressive but too large up front, the sf848 was underwhelming, I think the best monster put out of the newer gens was then 1100s so if you want a monster and not an older one then thats what I would go for. The hyper is a cool ride but the seat is too narrow for me and likely you'll see it as a larger wr. The mts1200 might meet your needs as it would take the f800 and monster place, but for me the large tank/shoulders are too much for me (like diavel). What do I have for reference? Monster 696, and st2. I had a 99 monster city as well.

Hyperstrada and Hypermotard, assuming you're intending the 821 variants, won't likely be any better on the heat.

They're both tall bikes, and IIRC are roomier seat-to-peg, so the ergos may be better for you.

I have had similar issues with being tall (6'2") and the heat on my M796, but on cooler days here in NJ it is fine.
I have the Kawi Versys for long distance riding on hot days or when my knees are acting up.
The Monster has been great for putting a smile on my face.
I will probably replace the Versys with a GS or a Multistrada next year, but I will hold on to the Monster.
Try lowering the foot pegs and changing the seat.

Dont discount good used 1100 Hypermotards. Just add a Sargent seat and the ergos are excellent. My lanky buddies really like my Hyper, they are amazed at how light and torquey it is.

Thanks for the pointers so far. Yesterday I went to the dealer that I bought the M821 from to see if I can get a test ride. They said they don't have any available models to demo, so sitting/starting was basically my only option. I don't really get that business practice especially since I'm already an established customer and a responsible person.  They have a 14' Low Hyperstrada, 13' Hypermotard and a 14' Hypermotard SP. I can almost flat foot the Low HS, the HM was balls of my feet, while the HMSP was toes.  I really need to get a test ride somewhere.

Luckily, I've got time on my side and I don't need to make a decision quite yet.

I test rode both the M821 and the M1200. Enjoyed them both   but the 821 just felt too small for me. I felt I was smothering the thing. However the 1200 was fantastic, fitted me well, with a sense of sitting 'in' it rather than 'on' it. So said goodbye to the S2R and so far (2k miles) no regrets.

Is the m821 v m1200 a different frame size?

Test ride an air cooled HM1100. They are 90-100hp WRs for the road. You will be amazed. Wink

I took an HS for a test ride. It felt like the seat was pushing me into the tank. That is pretty much my only complaint about it. YMMV

go find some locally for sale, say on craigslist, and testride one.
usually people will let u ride one before you buy one, especially if you show up in all gear on another ducati

I'll do even one better than that. I was notified by my original salesdude at the dealership here that he would be putting a 15' HM on demo status. I got first dibs on Thursday to take her around the block a few times. This is a special bike... I really liked it although I have some mixed feeling about the seat, acceleration, and buzzyness.

I've already seen plenty about the seat on the other forums. Most people change it right away for the DP seat. NBD.

Accelleration/buzzyness - I did the ride in Touring mode, which is what I usually ride on my M821. This should provide a decent comparison between the two. It honestly didn't feel like it had the same agility as my M821. Albeit, my Monster has a Termi race slip-on and tune.

I'm still doing research and coming across some used Hypers here and there on CL and alike. There's one guy in town here that's letting his 750mi 2014 HMSP go for 10500. That's not a bad deal at all! Fueling the fire...

Maybe I should just keep the Monster and get a used hyper? Hmm. Don't know if that will pass the wife test.

Thanks again for the direction, gents.
