Author Topic: High mileage s2r1000 purchase advice  (Read 2247 times)

I'm looking at a mechanic owned 06 s2r 1000 with upwards of 50k miles. Lots of maintenance, good condition, lots of mods...

I've owned an s2r1k before, among many other bikes it was my favorite.  821 (which I have decided I really don't like as it is completely devoid of soul or personality) Including my current monster. Sadly I only got to put 18k on it before I got t boned on it by an innatentive driver and it was totaled out.

Mileage doesn't necessarily scare me, I owned a 1098 with 50k miles on it when I sold it and it ran great when I sold. Realistically, how much life is left in this motor? Anyone out there have this kind of mileage on a DS motor that could chime in with advice?

how much is this bike really worth?

^ what he said. Guides are jello on S2R1000.

Motorwise, if the guides are replaced and in good order, then the motor will last as good as any with proper maintenance.  I had 30k on mine and it ran like a champ until i blew it up (my fault).

A stock S2R1000, with 50k no mods. I wouldn't pay more than $3k for it to be honest. You can buy one with significantly lower miles for about 5k. They aren't very common bikes though.

Not trying to thread-jack, but I'm also looking at a higher-mileage bike, an '06 S2R800 with about 40k on it.  Are the guides (assuming you mean valve guides) only an issue with the dual-spark heads, or is that something I should be concerned with on the smaller bike?

I'm probably missing something (newbie; first post, in fact), but I don't see how that thread ducpainter referenced applies to the OP's question, other than that poor bike being an S2R1000 and recently being serviced. NAKID's bike has a damaged rod bearing, right?

It could be said valve guides can be an issue on any Duc. The DS motors were notorious.

He asked about longevity of the DS motors.

Nakid's bike is a DS motor with less miles than 50K. It ate a rod bearing, and was serviced regularly.

HeMan had a DS motor with less than 50k that lunched...his fault or not.

Seems applicable to me.

Horizontal valve guide went to $hit on me at 48k. Aside from that, I havent had any issues and have religiously had her serviced. She still runs great and currently has 68k miles on her.

I also agree that with such high mileage (50k and up), The bike probably wouldnt fetch much more than 3k...

Be sure to check belt tension (?) pulleys also.... I had one grenade on me, and another freeze up. I'm guessing it was probably due to running open belt covers and riding her in the rain on NUMEROUS occasions..............

Thanks all for the info! After a bit of consideration, I ended up buying the yellow low mileage very nicely modded 96 m900 that was listed a while back instead.

That M900 is a nice bike. I might recheck the FS listings.
Was it the Con state bike? If so then very nice bike and the best I have seen apart from full, custom rebuild, show bikes.

Yes it was the CT bike. It looked great in the pictures, but in person it was absolutely pristine condition. The bike is amazingly in showroom condition. Perfect paint, everything was done right, everything works as it should, no corners were cut. I saw it and was sold. The original owner did an amazing job and had great taste when picking parts to put on it. I'm extremely happy with the choice to buy.
