I have a seat from a Monster on a custom subframe on my SV1000. The cover has a small hole in it, so it's time to replace the cover or the whole seat if I find the right deal. How can I tell which version the seat is? I picked it up really cheap on CL and don't know what year it came off of.

Edit: by 1st gen vs 2nd gen I mean 93-99 vs 00-07, I think that's what the generations are.

Probably the easiest way is to post a picture of it.

The early type have a wire type bracket at the rear and the later have a rod/post type retainer. They have different shaped forward sections to allow for a change in the tank cut away. How are you fixing the seat to the bike? If those components are removed its hard to tell the difference without putting the seat on a Monster.

The seat is unmodified, I have a square tube subframe with an upside down U shaped piece near the front for the front hold downs. I don't have a picture of the seat off the bike available right now (can take one tonight), and the pictures I have of the bike don't show the bottom. http://lolinter.net/201509ride/large/P9190001.JPG seems to be the best picture of the seat itself that I have on hand. http://lolinter.net/sv1k/large/IMG_1190.JPG also shows it, http://lolinter.net/sv1k/large/IMG_4100.JPG shows the subframe.

The following is for OEM seats only, if modified or aftermarket, YMMV.
This is a 2nd gen seat, dimension from bottom to top is ~ 5 1/2".
1st gen seat is ~ 4 1/2".

The bottom of 1st and 2nd gen seats are nearly identical, and have the same part number embossed in them.
~2005 or so and after, the 2nd gen seats were made with a captive (non-removable) post.

The post appears to be non-removable so I guess it's ~05+. Any suggestions for a cover? I've never installed one before either, how difficult is it?

A good source:

or  http://www.sargentcycle.com can make you a seat using your existing pan (got that on my bike, improvement in comfort).  I'm also sure there are local places who do motorcycle seats.

i like HTMoto.  the picture on their site is my seat.

I find the seat very comfortable already, I've done plenty of long trips on it (including back to back 600mi days, those were after a few somewhat shorter days). I'd also rather not spend new seat money. I don't want the seat any lower either, I like legroom.
