30 months for spamming AOL.

I hope he rots.  Yes, it is probably disproportionate to the crime, but I hope he gets "married" in prison too - once for each spam he sent.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I don't think so.

The article said he had 22 other convictions and is in the process of being charged with running a prostitution ring on craigslist.

+1.

Also, while a lot of "spam" is just that, more often than not, you (and I'm not talking to anyone in particular) signed yourself up for the spamming on some form you filled out somewhere.  Always have a throwaway address that you don't care about for use in times like that.  You'd be surprised what even scrupulous companies will do with your info.

I signed up for a yahoo address to use Yahoo Messenger to prank a friend -- two months later, I logged into the email address (for no reason, just wanted to see if it was active) and it had 318 emails -- every single one was spam.

The email address had never sent a single email, nor been given out for anything.  And it wasn't something you could "guess" like "gjohnson" or a typical name.

Explain to me THAT!

Easy actually.  I would bet you that a program was written that would fire test e-mails to all combinations of numbers/letters @ yahoo.com.  For every email that comes back undeliverable, they flag it in the db, when it is sent successfully, they mark it as a valid address and use it for spam.  I don't know for a fact that this is how it's done, but it's certainly possible.

Spammers may be assholes, but they're also some of the smartest devs on the web - it's amazing some of the shit they've been able to pull off.
