Sorry I'm late to this thread. How much gear do you want to carry when you tour, if you travel light like I do consider a Diavel, there are ways to carry some gear. I have a few bikes, love my M900, ST3 and I've owned quite a few bikes since my first, a Honda CB100, a long time ago. My 13' Diavel is the best Motorcycle I have ever owned - so far. To take nothing away from my Victory Kingpin which I have put 107K+ miles on without a repair or any of the BMWs I owned previously, but the Diavel is all day comfortable, TC that just works, ABS brakes that make it one of the fastest stopping bikes on the planet, major go juice on that right grip, and handles just fine. The only complaint I have is the rear shock is a bit stiff and tire wear is a bit short. I did ride the new MTS since it fits me and I thought about replacing both the ST3 and the Diavel with an MTS. Well the go juice just isn't there compared to my Diavel, I hear it is a software issue, and styling wise I could not see myself in the Man Cave at night having a Cigar with JD/Coke and looking at the MTS, it's just a little off, put the ST3 top half of the front fairing and maybe. Anyway, you at least owe it to yourself to take a test ride on a Diavel, just MHO. - Gene

I've ridden the Diavel but wasn't impressed with the ergonomics or comfort.  It's a really impressive bike but I just don't like the riding position.  Can't beat the Multi for comfort IMO and other than a pure drag race my 2014 Multistrada S is every bit as capable as the Diavel and probably moreso in the twisties.  I wasn't blown away by the DVT Multi but it is extremely comfortable and capable.  Way more comfortable than the Diavel.

Incidentally, there is supposedly a new map that cures the power issue on the new DVT Multi.

The MTS is comfy but to each his own, I'm 5'9", 30" inseam, 32/33 sleeve the Diavel is perfect for me I've ridden it twice to the Springfield Mile from Northern Virginia and quite a few all day trips on twisty mountain roads in VA/WV. It's not as knife sharp as the M900 in the tight stuff but it will still keep up all day, it does take a few miles to get the hang of pushing the limits. But really are we not lucky to be alive at this time with such brilliant choices, including the new Monster R. - Gene

I'm 5'11" barefoot so the Multi might be a better fit for me.  One of my complaints with the new Monster has been the cramped riding position.  I'm curious how the new Monster R compares.  I love the 1200 motor though and I'm glad Ducati is putting it in so many great bikes.

You can't underestimate the importance of personal fit. Like a suit.

I'm a 5'9" short-arse.   Me and the new Multi will manage just fine.....  the Diavel's cruiser-ish riding position just is not for me.  I agree the Multi isn't an object of droolsome beauty......  none of the so-called adventure touring bikes are..... function dictates.

But the Diavel is - IMO - a crass piece of high-power bling.  Tasteful, like spinners on yer pimped-up Hummer.  And I have no idea why it so frequently gets a mention in a thread about 'Monster to Multi'.

Yup mate, I think you just might be right.  Gonna need the low seat though.

I topple off my jacked-up DR, look around to make sure there were no witnesses, kick it, laugh, pick it up and ride on.  Tippy-toed tip-overs won't be nearly so funny on a new Multi.

At 5'8" my Hyper is a bit high for me, but I've been practicing the butt cheek shuffle.

the Diavel's cruiser-ish riding position just is not for me.  .

I really don't understand why you say that, only difference in the rider traingle is you sit in the bike on a Diavel instead of on it like the MTS. Sitting on the Diavel is nothing like sitting on my KP or my 01' Sportcrusier.

With over 9K miles on my Diavel I think this article is pretty accurate
http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/ducati/2011-ducati-diavel-review-90421.html

and buried in there is this description of the rider position "Overall, the Diavel’s rider triangle is open and neutral with just a hint of sporting stance, which you’ll appreciate when hustling this wicked-quick cruiser-sportbike-naked-type thing along fast sweepers"

BTW how many miles do you have on a Diavel? On a MTS?

Truth be told I actually miss the more athletic riding position of my M900, except when I get to the 450 mile mark on a ride. - Gene

I'll chime in on that.  I've only ridden the Diavel once, probably 30 miles round trip to work and back including some freeway riding.  Zero wind protection was my biggest issue with it.  Yeah, it's fast.  Yeah, it handles and brakes well and it is actually very easy to ride but man did I feel like a sail out in the wind on the freeway on that thing.  The faster you go the worse it gets.  The Multi gives you a commanding view of the road and it gives you some wind protection (helmet roar not withstanding).

They really are two completely different bikes so I'm not sure why we're comparing them.  The Multi seems to do everything well.  I've owned mine for a year now and have put 7,000 miles on it so far.  Best bike I've ever owned and it puts a smile on my face every time I ride it.

Totally agree with you on that I did some comparison shopping testing on shields, there was an article on Ducati.net with pictures, I have a Fabbri GenX shield, works a little better than the setup on my M900.

Your also right that they are two different bikes, the only reason they compare is the guts of the two are pretty much the same, motor/electronics. I compared them because I had considered the two and the M1200S at the time I purchased my Diavel. I was just trying to share my experience. Now that the M1200R is out it might be time to have a 2nd look at that bike as well, from what I've read they fixed a few issues but they also increased the ride height. - Gene
