I've had my '05 Monster S4R (Desmoquattro) for 10 years/48k miles now and its one of 4 bikes.

I'm looking for a new touring rig that provides more comfort than my '04 Bandit 1200S.  The Bandit's been great, but with 92000 miles on the clock, the cam chain's a bit stretched (OEM spring-loaded tensioner replaced with a manual one) and although it's running flawlessly, I'm not too confident about taking it back-and-forth across the country anymore.

I figure that the Monster is worth far more than a Bandit with 92k miles ( laughingdp ), and maintaining 2 Ducatis would require too much effort, time and money (plus 5 bikes in the garage would be manly, but a tight fit).

So, I'd like to hear a few opinions on a possible trade and in particular I'd like to hear from anyone with a new Multi who tours on it.  Is it comfortable?  Wind protection?

Sell the older Bandit, new engines are service friendly regarding spacing, 600miles and then 18000miles or if you want to change oil and filter at least once a year is a 4hr job, oil/filter change, air filter inspection, rear hub lub, front wheel bearing check, fluids levels check . . . and on the 18000miles mark, valve check/adjustment, 60 months-belt replacement ..

my $0.02

Thanks Darkmonster620!  I failed to mention that I do all my own maintenance: valve lash, tires, oil change, belts, jetting, etc.

The older Bandit is only worth maybe $1000.

Why is changing the oil and air filter a 4 hour job? Also, I noticed the horizontal cylinder timing belt cover has an air filter in it. Why?

for yearly service? because of this, : once a year is a 4hr job, oil/filter change, air filter inspection, rear hub lub, front wheel bearing check, fluids levels check . .  on the MTS1200 you need to take bodywork off . . on M821 is much less time

LOL, maybe I should look at the Yamaha FJR1300.  Shaft drive is looking attractive...

I put 5200 miles on a 2015 MTS S Touring (I'd upgraded from a 2012 MTS S Touring). Depending on your height and dimensions, the 2015 can be pretty comfortable for longer distances. The higher seat works better for me (I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam) for my knees but the lower seat works better for wind protection. The bike is pretty comfortable over all, however. I rode it nearly 1000 miles for a weekend trip, felt pretty good over all. The S model has the latest skyhook suspension which works very, very well. The motor is great (with the new map that was released this week 10/27/2015, hopefully fixes the tune which wasn't great). The handling is awesome, I could drag a knee on it. Milage was pretty good on mine but I tend to take it super, super easy when I'm touring so my best, I think, was 52mpg 130 miles and put 2.9 gal in it's 5.3 gal tank.

There were a bunch of issues with the bike that you'll find discussion on over at ducati.net forums that some were cool with but I wasn't so I ended up trading it on another bike. I'd wait (unless you already pulled the trigger) for the map to be show to resolve the fueling issues and then check out the other MTS forum to get a better idea of what's going on with the 2015.

I've begun thinking about not trading the Monster in on a Multistrada 1200s DVT....   Evil
