Thank you , Thank you , Thank you ,,,,, something new every day .    back to the bike though ,,, fuses etc. good ,,, ???

drew23

ok , so if the motor turns with the starter "jumped " ,,,,starterswitch ??  what else could be ?? rather than e- buy-in one an waiting ,,,

drew23

tried solenoids from both harnesses ,,, same thing ,,, nothing ,,, what else in the circuit could go ???  ,,,,  ???

There is a white connector on the solenoid.  The red/blue wire is from the starter button.  Orange/black is ground.  Key on, on an '01, sidestand up, in neutral you should get power to the R/B wire to the solenoid.  If so, and the bike starts when you bypass the solenoid you need a solenoid.

Next thing to check is the main relay.  Pull the relay.  Terminal 30 is power, and should be live with the key on 85 is your "trigger"  Key on, 85 should have power.
86 is ground.  If so, jump 30 to 87.  If bike now cranks replace relay.  You can also check the relay as a component.  86 to ground, 85 to battery positive.  You should hear a click and have continuity between 87 and 30.

If I remember correctly, your '01 had a side stand safety switch and relay out of the box (that part I remember correctly) and the '99 had an automatic retracting (suicide) side stand and warning light.  I have a feeling your problem is from that difference.  You will need to check the wiring diagrams against each other.

,,, not sure I follow with the terminals , relay  thing , specifically . though the kickstand wiring is something i'll look into . taking apart the starter switch currently ,,, thnx

You need to diagnose, not guess and replace or disassemble good components for no reason.  A relay is simply a remote electromagnetic switch.  Think of it this way, the switch on the wall connects 30 and 87.  Power from you, terminal 85 is applied, the light goes on.  http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/relay1.htm  The connector numbers are usually written on the relay.

Before going further there are two things you must do.  Get yourself wiring diagrams for both bikes.  And a repair manual.  For what you are doing this will be fine  http://www.haynes.com/products/productID/339  The 2001 wiring diagram can be found here  http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do  It is at the end of the owner's manual.  The '99 diagram will be in the Haynes book as well as directions for testing many electrical components.

thanks for the helpful insight ,- a Haynes , as well as a printed owners manual , are at disposal . The xyz concept of a relay/switch is something I grasp ,,, what I don't know is anything the might be specifically monster related , that while working on , these forums are a great for . also great to read through and see how others are doing and whats going on . been working on getting bike back on the road for years ,, a little bit here , a little bit there , as time and $ and life allows .  thnx again ,,,

heres the motor that's in ,,, april 2013
swapped out the 750 3months ago : )

drew23

the starter switch check didn't make a difference ,,, something tells me it something simple ( hopefully )  ,,, just have to find/figure out what ,,   ???

drew23

tried both (2) relays and (2) solenoids ,,, different combos there of (from two harnesses ) . the 750 would start ,,,,  [bang]

can't find what these should be attached to ,,, what are these connections ?? important to ignition ?  [bang]

One is a brwn/wht and blue/black ,,, other is red/wht and blk/wht . ,,, ???

They look like the rear brake light and fuel level sensor plugs to me.

,,, that they r ,,, thanks . though that just means I still have to find what the problem is ,,, do know its not those .  trying to get it solid as I go ,- tanks not on , don't want to have to back-track because of getting in a hurry . seriously thinking I may have to take harness completely off again ,,,

i had exactly the same issue on my 97 monster...indicators, headlight etc... but no starter motor....

mine turned out to be  a short in the harness between the starter motor switch and the connector to the starter motor             ..... and this might seem like a stupid comment but is the battery connected correctly? i ask because when I bought a new battery i put it in the wrong way  and i had everything but starter motor ( i luckily only blew a fuse when i did this )
