Want to get the board's take on this -- I want to buy an S4RS Tricolore, and I've found two wonderful exemplars. Each has been recently serviced and is very clean.
One has 12,000 miles -- fully stock -- and costs $8k
The other has 4,000 miles, full Termis, and costs $12k
What say ye?

I wouldn't even blink at those mileages. I do 5k a year. As long as maintenance has been kept up it shouldn't have an issue

Not much difference in those two bikes longevity wise...if...
the recent 12K service wasn't the first on the 12K bike.
I'd look at maintenance records if available.
Was the oil changed regularly, and before any periods of prolonged storage? This goes for either bike.
How many valves were actually adjusted on the 12K bike, or did they just do a 'check' and call them good?
Do you plan on adding exhaust? If so, the lower miles plus the cans/ecu might be worth the price if they changed the ecu.
Since these bikes are close to 8 years old the maintenance would be the most important factor to me.

I kind of wanted to put a Quat D Ex Box on it, but I'll probably leave the Termis if I choose that bike. I tend to think the factory worked with Termignoni and so such bikes run best with those products -- though I don't love the looks of the long, thin cans...
I'll ask for the records on both bikes, thanks for the advice!

If you want to reduce power and make the bike sound obnoxious, and possibly run like ass, then go with the Quat-D.
One mans opinion...and you know what
they
say about that.

Hahaha -- but I want it to run well AND sound obnoxious!
One time, on a "canyon run" around Bear Mountain, my bike all of a sudden started sounding *glorious*! So good I was starting to wonder what Rockwell had done to it (I was leaving his shop). Then I realized, one of the exhausts had simply fallen off.

I have never heard any S4RS, though I have heard the termis on many other bikes, from my first monsters to Multistradas and Diavels. I have to say, I don't think the 1198 testastretta engine sounds nearly as good as the m900 or the superquadro. But I like how effortless it is to drive -- it will be interesting to experience the 998.

You're hearing the stroke difference.
The M900 and the 916/996 are long stroke motors.

Man, I just love mine. It may be the best engine ever fitted to a motorcycle IMO.

well i bought one! i chose the cheaper one with more miles because it was closer to me and cheaper. i hope it proves a good choice, the seller seemed trustworthy and the bike is clean.
12,200 miles isn't too much is it? i don't think it is. my m900 has 25,000 miles on it and still runs like a freaking champ.
so, i'm an s4rs tricolore member -- i think there are less than 400 of us! is that worldwide or just in the US?

I prefer a long stroke...
