Need help with clutch

I hope there's an easy way to figure out how I messed up.

I removed the transmission case (2009 696) to replace the gasket because of a leak (I've done it before). But, now that everything is back together and, what I thought, exactly the way I took it apart, I can't shift gears. I can get it in first or neutral but that's it.

I've tried moving the placement of the clutch but it either gets worse or allows me to go from first to something else and no further. Aaaargh.  [bang]

Please help me figure out what the hell I did.

Which "case" are you talking about?

Engine casing on clutch side (alternator case cover).

Just a theory (one of several): the last clutch plate is supposed to sit in it's very own slot - offset to the others. I'm not sure if a mistake there will cause your issues, but it might be something to look into...

OK, that's still ambiguous.

The clutch and it's cover is on the right side of the bike (when you're sitting on it as if riding).

Alternator and it's cover is on the left.

Which one?

sorry for the confusion. Alternator cover on the left side of my 696. After too many hours wondering what is wrong, I called a tow truck. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you laid the bike on it's side to avoid draining the oil, or the fluid level in the clutch master was low, it could have gotten air into the system.

Bleed it and see if that helps.

Which gasket did you replace?

Sounds like the shift arm is binding, something is not aligned correctly.
Did anything other than the cover come off?

If I understand correctly - R&R alternator cover to replace gasket and subsequently shifting isn't right.

Assume everything is together correctly.

Going for simple.  Did you get the external linkage on at the proper angle so you have leverage and throw?  Does the clutch rod still move freely?  Did you bleed the clutch hydraulics per SD?

Below is my instructional cutaway ;-)

Thanks everybody.

Yup, I replaced the alternator cover gasket (I had to do it once before last year...darn leaks). I'm pretty sure I placed everything back exactly the way I took it off (I have a cardboard diagram for disassembly/reassembly). Anyway, all that but I did not bleed the system. I'm really hoping that's all it is. But, after several hours of moving the clutch lever assembly to try and figure it out, I didn't want to make things worse. So.....it's in the shop. Here's hoping for a quick/low cost outcome.
