I have a really hard time seeing the speed on my digital Monster dash, I'm wondering if there is a way to make the backlight stay on, even in the daytime?  Is there a way to defeat the light sensor (i.e: cover it up, trick it?)

Yes, but the backlight goes out when it's sunny out.  There must be a sensor (photo cell?) in the screen somewhere that senses light.... or possibly remotely, but I doubt that.

There is no sensor . .  Light must be hitting dash directly . . .the 696s and 796s that I've riden the only way not to be able to see the dash was direct sunlight to it . . .could you post a pic?

Maybe I'm wrong, and going back through the manual seems to indicate this.  My problem is the shadow created by the windscreen... not in direct light, but afternoon light, for example.  The speed readout, down in the lower right corner, just disappears into grey on grey.   [bang]

I believe this is an "old guy problem"  Young eyes see these displays just fine, but the problem is very real for old eyes. Check my thread in Accessories & Mods. The solution is available from Trail Tech, they make a unit which displays speed, mileage, average, max, and other stuff.  Intended for off road bikes that have no instruments, the most basic unt works great for a street bike. trailtech.net; less than $100 for the kit.  This unit is much brighter than Ducati's, it is ALWAYS readable at a glance.
