Kickstand question...
«
on:

OK, so the only dumb question is the one not asked, right?
'13 M796 w/5400 miles.
The paint is starting to flake off at the kickstand weld... the little bit I know about metal fatigue tells me that might be a bad weld? ...or is the metal flexing (not the weld) when it's put on it's stand? ...or just crappy paint prep? All the years and all the motorcycles... I've never seen paint flake like that at a weld unless it was a bad weld.
I don't normally sit on my bike while it's on the side stand, but I can't vouch for the previous owner.

Not a great piece of design work...
definitely not a first class weld either.

I didn't think it was very well thought out, either. Should I have it zapped with another weld, you think? I just don't want to come out to find the Monster flopped over on the ground...

I don't think it's going to break by the weight of the bike alone.
That said, if it gives you piece of mind then have it reinforced.

I can tell little from the photo. Clean, examine carefully, if you want to be sure, find a shop with a Magniflux machine (some old automotive machine shops have them) and let them check it for cracks. The machine will find cracks that are not visible on the surface.

Anyone who sits on their bike on the kickstand should be banned from riding.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.
