A very sad day.

Appeared he lost the front tipping in, went straight off, and the bike got to the airfence first.

Layout to be changed to F1 setup for the rest of the event:

RIP. A promising young rider.

I hope the change makes a genuine difference and isn't just a knee jerk reaction to a freak accident. Not much you can do to stop the freak occurrence of a bike bouncing back at the rider off the air fence, the rider hitting the bike if it gets wedged in the air fence or the bike landing on the rider. Anyone got a pic of the new corner layout? It looks like less run off even though it should be slower and we all know that what works for F1 doesn't often work well for Motos.

This was the best aerial view that I found"

My first look at it, seemed like most of the runoff throughout the track was on the stingy side.
But looked at aerial views of a few other tracks... and they all look stingy.

Hope this helps, F1 circuit has 16 turns, MotoGP has 14, so instead of doing 12-13-14 now they'll do 12-13-14-15-16

Here's a good one with speeds for an F1 car ~10 years ago, before they put the chicane in on the last part.
And another from a few years ago, with MotoGP speeds.
David Emmett's article had speed at about 170 kph.
Given that T12 and T13 are same speed, runoff at T12 seems a bit short.

It looks like Honda's found something, or perhaps just MM's crew.
He's backing it into corners and mopping the floor with everyone else, it's been quite a while since he did that.

And he's fastest in 3 of the 4 sectors, and was only pipped by Pedrosa by 0.003 sec in Sector 1.

Espargaro basically says that how can lamentino say "that everyone is against him by changing the layout of the track and that if he has not noticed that someone died and that safety is first . . . and ends up saying that if Honda wins is because they're better"  <<< summarized version

Wow. I hope VR isn't losing it again (after last year) in these circumstances, that would be very poor form.

this is lamentino's comment:

Valentino Rossi polemic: "Absurd editing the curve 9. Maybe somebody wanted to take advantage of it"

Article
Stefano Sweets
In this article

Valentino Rossi

The champion of Tavullia along with teammate Lorenzo wrangle for the Safety Commission's decision to amend not only the infamous turn 12 but also the Turn 9 after the accident of Luis Salom: "I do not understand why the curve 9 have also changed, It was enough to change only the curve 12. Maybe someone wanted to take advantage of it. "
Rossi: "Absurd change the curve 9" Use even more harsh and polemical tones Valentino Rossi , according to which those who still wanted to change the trajectory of the curve 9 has made it to gain an advantage for their bikes ...
"I think Salom has had some technical problems. What happened could have happened in other parts of the track. It should be said that the curve 12 in the past had occurred that pilots were going to beat violently against the air fence at that point. Adjust that point is right but do not understand why the curve has been modified 9. Maybe somebody wanted to help their bikes ... they say that the curves have changed both to prevent the escape routes in conflict? is not it those who say the mind ...
"After what has happened, the Race Direction has changed the curve of the incident and that the stadium and we are suffering in the detached forts, where instead the Honda is more agile. My opinion is that he went only changed the curve of the incident, not even the curve 9. the track is now much slower and you have to admit that our bikes out of the slow corners makes a lot more effort. i believe that on such an occasion were to be heard all the drivers on the grid, not just the 10 who participated in the Safety Commission meeting. I did not know they planned to hold this meeting, after what happened would have to convene all 24 MotoGP riders, I who am the champion leaders expect to be consulted. Now you can not most do anything, if we do result we can dedicate the podium or victory. I think that you had to turn 12 not change yesterday, but long before, there was no gravel to stop "

Maybe VR shares my concerns that they changed too much as a knee jerk reaction to what could have been a freak accident? So he feels they should have just changed the one corner and not a series of corners?

Is VR claiming a Spanish/Honda conspiracy against Yamaha and himself? laughingdp
