M695 velocity stacks & pod filters
«

I see lots of positive comments about getting rid of the airbox and going to individual filters - either K&N type or UNI foam, with or without velocity stacks. I see there are kits for this, but I'm wondering if I could make my own with one of several pairs of stacks (S4, ST3, 748) I see on ebay...
Couple of questions -
What would be a good stack length favoring low end power over top end on the M695? Is there a stock piece that would be adaptable? It looks like fitting the filter over the flared end of a stack might be a problem - but the flare could be trimmed? Why does the airbox have unequal length stacks?
Should this mod be done without an ECU reflash? I'm currently running some Micron straight through slip ons and the FatDuc O2 sensor manipulator.

As per Motowheels, their Corse Dynamics kit:
INCLUDED COMPONENTS
(2) Billet Aluminum Velocity Stacks
(2) K&N Intake Air Filters
(1) Crankcase Breather Filter
(1) Air box eliminator kit (includes all hardware, zip ties, and brackets to mounts coils or anything else applicable.
DESCRIPTION
Corse Dynamics has built a kit utilizing the highest quality components to ensure not only peak horsepower but long life as well.
This kit utilizes large K&N 1 million mile warranty air filters, crankcase breather, idle air filter, 6061 billet CNC machined and lightened velocity stacks, as well as stainless steel washers, nuts & bolts. This is the most complete kit available.*
As the dyno results show this system (with ecu tuning) can provide OEM power on the low end with substantial power gains in the mid range and top end. We have seen this kit installed on 2 valve Ducati's achieve horsepower numbers over 100 to the rear wheel.
* Air idle filter kit not included, please check to see if your model needs a relocation kit. If needed they can be purchased here:
http://motowheels.com/i-23899691-corse-dynamics-idle-air-filter-kit.html
Contact us for an ECU MW Tuning / REXXER reflash.
Now, IMHO, a reflash would be in order since you will have intake and exhaust modified, this means, MORE air coming in, MORE air going out, so, you NEED more fuel to keep it running and also to keep it cool . . .

Well I'll be damned - I was under the impression that this was a forum for learning about Ducati motorcycles. Guess I was misinformed.

Nope, it is what you are looking for, it just has all kinds of people looking to learn about Ducatis.
It takes all kinds to make a good forum... Except politicians and marketers.

..."marketers" - I guess that doesn't include the first reply above?
I've since found a post -
http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=45504.0
- where the filters were connected to the throttle body to airbox "hoses" on a couple of S4s - maybe that's the way to go and forget about the velocity stacks?

Nope, Carlos doesn't work for MotoWheels... I'm under the impression he lives in the wrong country.

For some on-topic commentary - While you can just mount the filters to the "elbows" you don't get any velocity stack benefits that way.
IMO, the Motowheels solution isn't doing much as a velocity stack either.
Good stacks get most of their gain from the "roll" at the top. The more you interfere with that (generally by adding filters) the less gain you get from them. The further around the "roll" before you start interfering, the better. Those "snap-on" type filters flow the worst of the options.
As for the stock unequal length stacks, remember that the stock exhaust is not exactly equal length either. Add in the difference in cooling/fueling requirements due to the L-configuration... I'm sure it makes sense to OEM engineers in the context of all the other engineering compromises made for a (relatively) mass market street bike.
