Hey guys,

It's been a long time since I've been around. Got really busy with life, family, kids, etc.

Anyway I'm finally getting back to putting my Monster back together. I had Norm Brown build me a 944 from a '94 900SS motor he had lying around.

Long story short, I just got the motor back in the frame and I can't get the shift drum to rotate to 1st gear. It'll stop at what appears to be the neutral detent, and then it'll move a little past that but it just stops hard. I can't rotate the drum manually with a screwdriver either. I'm hoping someone might have an idea what the cause could be before I have to pull everything back apart and split the cases.

Are you rotating the countershaft sprocket back and forth to give the shift dogs somewhere to go?

Yup, rotating it and can get it into all 5 other gears just fine.

So has anyone had this experience before? Is it something that happens if the motor is new, no oil, isn't running, clutch isn't hooked up yet so it's still engaged, etc. Trying to decide if I should continue assembling with the hope that I can get it in gear when the motor's actually running or if I should back up, and tear the motor down now.

How complete is the assembly of the motor?

Complete except I just took the alternator cover off while troubleshooting this...

Pull the clutch plates so you've got free access to turn both the input and output shafts of the transmission.

Then see if you can get the trans to shift into first.

So no luck even with the clutch out. I will say that when turning the input side of that transmission and attempting to shift into first, I can feel drag if I apply pressure to the shift drum. I don't feel anything on the drum side though, and no feeling of grinding or anything of that sort. Anyone have any ideas?
