I love that site.  BMW owners get into a tizzy even faster than ducati owners.

Meh, he's right in many ways. I still frequent Ducati.ms, now all I do on there is sift through dozens of posts about "should I buy a Ducati (x) as my first bike?" "Which oil is best?" "Why this oil sucks" "Which tires are best" "This tire sucks" "My (x) keeps stalling!" and my personal favourite "What's this?"  with vague descriptions or IZ_ photos of some useless bolt or plastic cladding that the poster is terrified might be important.

Strangely, it seems that prophecy about Japanese bike owners and noobs rushing out to buy 1098/848s came true, at least in the way .MS has gone downhill in the last year.

^^^ +1   It's sad but true, you can replace BMW with Ducati everywhere in that thread.

Duc and BMW owners usually have $$.  If I had tons of dough to throw around I wouldn't change my oil or install a throttlemeister.  I would drop off the bike and go ride another one of several bikes that I own.  If I didnt have another, I would buy one to ride while the first one was being serviced.   ;D

I'm hoping that I can find one of these suckers to pay way too much for the honda I am rebuilding.

damn right.. this site and it's members are like being in kindergarten compared to gang bangers in a shit hole public school in the bad part of Compton.

there is a lot of useful info there. I'm keeping a low profile for now - I don't like arguing, get enough of that at home  [laugh]

Everyday an idiot is born who cant turn a wrench.

I love that site. I've been lurking there about 2-3 years and I'm still finding different facets of that forum. It takes awhile to learn their adv language and get all the jokes so you can fully experience it. Reading that place is pushing me into dualsport-dom, but i'd never go ducless.

Yea, a lot of Duc owners are always taking the bike to the shop. Even me. I just took my wheel down to have a new tire put on. While I was there, I asked them to clean the dust off the rim so that I didn't void the warranty.  [cheeky]

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Please don`t forget the Harley owners [thumbsup]

F'in harley riders. Let me tell you a story.

Wednesday I started my bike and was heading to work, but had to stop and get gas. So I fuel up and go to start my bike...and nothing. Battery was flat, wouldn't turn over. So I start asking if people have jumper cables...and of course no one does. 5 people. I don't know if they are too busy to help me or what.

Anyways, I ask the 6th guy I walk up to and he says "Yeah...I have some." So I ask him if he'll give me a boost and he says sure, and then I point to my bike.

him:"Oh, no....I don't have any bike jumpers, just car jumpers..."
me:  :o....what?
him: you can't jump a bike off with normal cables. You have to have specific cables. I have some, but I don't keep them in my truck.
me: it's alright man...I've jumped my bike off with normal cables before...they'll work
him: no, no...you'll over charge your battery and it could explode.

at this point, I'm utterly amazed. Where did this man here this? I have to know more.

me: where did you hear this? I've never heard this before...
him: Oh, the mechanic at the *** ***** H-D told me that you have to have bike specific jumper cables to jump the bike off. I called at the beginning of the riding season to find out if i had a 12v or 24v battery in the bike because it has been sitting all winter. He told me that you have to have a certain type of cables that won't over charge the battery. They brought out their towing truck and started my bike. I can give you their towing number if you want...they're great guys.
me: oh... [roll]...well, we can jump this bike off with normal ones...I'll take my chances with the battery cause I need to get work.
him: nah man...I'm afraid it might hurt your bike. Here, I'll call the tow truck for you...btw what is this bike?
me: Its a Ducati. Never mind man, I'll just call my wife to come get me...

And thats what I did. She pulled her car up and jumped me off...with regular cables...and I went on my way to work.

[laugh]

I couldn't believe it. They sold the poor guy HD specific jumper cables for his electra-glide...at probably 3 times the actual value of the cables.  [bang]

Anyways...thats my harley guy story. And I was 30 minutes late to work  >:(

The HD guy had a point, he was just fooled into thinking cables were the problem. Its not a good idea to boost off a running car because of the amperage produced, which can damage your battery in theory. The solution is to boost off a car that isn't running. Cables don't make any difference unless they have a power converter (regulator) built in - which I do not think exists.

Exactly - I had a VMAX with a battery that I had to keep boosting for a week off an old car battery that I had at home before I bought a new one. I haven't and wouldn't do it from a running car - I may be completely wrong not doing so.. I just don't know better.  :-[
