Carburetir return cable

 I have the carbs on and off my 900M a few times to deal with jetting and float level changes ....The only real pain for me is getting the damn return cable hooked up... So I left it off.....I've had many bikes with a pull cable only and never had an issue with the throttle closing including this bike...Is it just a gov't mandated safety item or am I asking for trouble by not using the return cable? I will just remove it completely from the twist grip  ................................

It will return too far with the oem throttle on return stroke and be sloppy. You could put an aftermarket throttle on with a single cable set up. I once tried a Mikuni quick turn throttle and it feels good. The throttle pull was a bit heavier but ok and the butterfly style carb snapped back fine.
It was a safety thing but I have found improperly set up dual cables can cause plenty of unsafe binding and snagging. A dual cable set up is good for flat slide or round slide carbs. I have had both round slide and flat slide carbs jam open at speed. Not fun.

Note that many oem butterfly type throttle bodies now have single cable operation. A slide type mechanism can be vacuum locked fully open or just jammed through wear like on old Del Ortos, VM or Amal carbs. A very strong and uncomfortable return spring is needed on those carbs.

I learned to remove the carbs with the cables intact on the carbs but disconnected from the throttle. I do like the cleanness of a single cable set up, but it means forking out for a new throttle assembly compatible with the carbs and cables.

 I didn't notice the throttle returning to far and being sloppy...But I only went out for a few short rides...If it does I might be able to fabricate an internal stop....

How did you go? Did you need to make an internal throttle stop? I ended up using a quick turn, single cable throttle.

  I didn't need to make a stop , just enough play using the cable adjuster......On the road during sporting riding the throttle doesn't hang up
