How in the world do you get to that with removing a metric ton of other shit?

Shorten a standard L-style allen wrench, be careful to not overheat it in the process.

You mean cut it off with a dremel, but don't distort the profile at the cut? Do you know what size that is?

Holy crap I thought that was a goof, turns out it's for REAL!

It's a 5mm, although a tinch loose (might be the cheap quality.) 5.5 won't fit in there tho. How tight should it be, because a cursory tug on it tell me it might need some PB Blaster and a wack after being in there for 17 years.

Yes, 5mm hex key, cut with an abrasive wheel.

Likely quite tight after that long, spec is 17 ft-lb.
PB is magical stuff, nothing to lose.

Nice tools, but I don't think they would have helped in this case. I cut down the allen to 3/4 of an inch & it barely clears the space.

You'll be greasing that bolt when you put it back. ;D

I've been lucky but I grease every bolt I deal with.

Amazingly it came out. Soaked overnite with PBBlaster and then again this morning and given a good wack with a long drift and soft mallet.

Last couple of questions. I cut the cage off the stem tonite and after trying several different points of attack, got the inner race to bend to my will. There's a large metal ...washer between it and the bottom triple. The replacement bearings came with seal (metal/rubber.) Use both when I reassemple or just the supplied one? Also I pretty sure the lock nut goes flat side up, but need confirmation of that.

Which supplier did you get the bearings from?

I've seen sets that had a rubber/steel seal.... that had *way* too big hole in the center.
And the seal part was tall enough to get squished up against the outer race.

Mock it up prior to driving the inner race onto the stem.
