Recently bought a new helmet (Arai) that came with a Pinlock system and a clear Pinlock shield.  Seems like a great way of switching tints as needed though I wonder whether they were meant to be installed and swapped out multiple times.

While you can remove the pinlock insert from the face shield (often called “visor” in US, but “face shield” is the proper name), and re-instal, I wouldn't recommend to do it on the road side. (And I can guarantee you that you wouldn't like doing it.)

Installing pinlock insert itself isn't difficult at all.
However, inner surface of the pinlock sheet gets scratched VERY easily.
It gets dirty easily (eg, touching with your finger tips).
Dirt, some small foreign object can get trapped between the pinlock insert and face shield, which is downright annoying.
Repeatedly removing from the face shield can cause premature wear of the silicon sealant. (If the seal is not perfect, Pinlock wouldn't work. Actually, if you let it happen, it's much worse than regular face shield fogging up.)

For your purpose, I'd say, try Pro-Shade system.
Yes, it makes your helmet (and you) look dorky. But it works.
In a way, I like it (Pro-Shade system) better than drop down internal sun visor.

But, then again, I like photochromic shield on X-14 MUCH BETTER.
(That said, during the summer time, I use smoke mirror fire orange more often.)

If I were still using my RX-7-X, I would just carry extra shield (clear) and use dark tinted shield for day time use.
