Monster 1100 vs Moto Guzzi V11 Sport
«

Sitting at home sick and kinda bored, so I decided to do a spec comparison between my departed Moto Guzzi V11 Sport and my 2010 Monster 1100. The reason for the interest (at least for me) is the fact that they are both 2-valve, 2-cylinder, air cooled sporting bikes with almost the same engine capacity. Bikes are 10 years apart and a lot of development can happen, though, looking at the specs of Monsters at the time if an 1100 had been produced it appears the numbers would not be that different. Things I remember about the MG: vibrated like hell, not incredibly fast off the line, surprisingly twitchy in the handling department, needed to get the engine spinning decently to get power, but still an out of steam a bit quickly.
Displacement 1064 1078
Bore x stroke 92x80 98x71.5
Compression 9.8:1 10.7:1
Max power 91hp @7800 95@7500
Max torque 94Nm @6000 103Nm @6000
Final drive shaft chain
Front tire 120/70-17 120/70-17
Rear tire 180/55-17 180/55-17
Wheelbase 57.9” 57.1”
Dry weight 483 lb 373lb
I admit I'm no great mechanical mind so my observations might be way off but these are them anyway. Obviously the first thing the Ducati has going for it is the HUGE weight difference. MG further encumbered by the shaft. I'm surprised at the big torque difference since the Ducati has so much additional bore and shorter stroke. I'm sure compression has something to do with it but still... Despite the shorter wheelbase the Duc is much more stable - I think MG probably got aggressive with the steeling geometry to counteract the weight. Also the Duc much more comfortable despite my 6'2" frame.

Those dry weights are fantasy numbers IMO, but nonetheless, the ~100 lb weight difference is the biggest thing.
And a different philosophical focus; MG more of a Grand Touring than a Sport in the big picture.
I rode one a long long time ago, perhaps an 1100 LeMans, maybe early 80's.
Struck me as heavy, oh so long wheelbase, very relaxed motor.
