When you cant afford the latest heated gloves.

Im sure some have tried this. Probably old news to Northern Hemispherians, but I was surprised that no one I ride with has considered this down here. Known for our hot summers we can also get winter days down to 30°F and under for a few days. Some of those days are dry, bright and sunny and beautifully crisp.
Was looking at heated gloves and the wire free battery powered brands are great but very expensive. On very cold days and longer runs they may also need a recharge as the batteries may only last a few hours on a higher heat setting. A guy at a bike shop said he gets those heater packs hikers use and places them under his gloves on the back of his hands where you can see the veins under the skin, this he said, works as a heat exchanger warming blood that travels to the tips of the fingers. Some brands last 8 or more hours and heat up to 100-110°F/37-46°C. I ride in temps as low as 30°F/0°C if its dry and my gear works well except for the tips of my fingers and knuckles. Some of these heat packs/pads have an adheisive backing which makes location easier in boots, gloves and on your underlayer over your kidndey area. I dont know if any brands can get hot enough to burn you if directly against the skin so read the instructions/warnings carefully.
I'll give this a go and let you know.

I use the toe warmers at the range on cold days, and sometimes the hand warmers as the guy at the shop described..
The ones designed for shoes must be worn over socks, and inside shoes, or they can burn you as they're designed for a low oxygen environment.

Dunno. They require a layer between the pack and your skin. Two pairs of gloves?
The regular hand packs stay put in fitted type gloves, like riding gloves.

Hey Koko
Have you tried these yet? If yes how were they and what brand. It's getting cold in the west too.
Thanks

Yeah, they work well depending on the brand of heat pack. It's certainly worth asking at the camping/adventure shop. The fishermen and hikers seem to know what brands work. I stick them over the veins on the wrist and those on the back of my hands onto the gloves. Also put onto my socks or on the base of the boots. Also considering sticking one over each kidney area on the undergarment.

What we do to keep warm as years roll by.
Never used anything in 70s on rides to Bathurst races. Young and no feeling then.

Bought the el cheapo single use ones and used them inside the gloves yesterday. Big help . Temp was 3 deg c in morning and heat lasted full 7 hour ride day.
Thanks again Koko.
