I remember something along the lines of they had 3 or 4 of those all ~same for the movie.
But I could be wrong.

There were two used to film the chase scene. I believe this one was the survivor so to speak. I think they filmed that chase scene for 3 weeks for the 10min of the movie. (?)

I'm surprised they only went through 2 of those cars in 3 weeks.
I'd think they'd get through 8 or more in that span of time.

There has long been speculation as to the amount of stunt driving McQueen performed. Some sources say he undertook the whole thing, with the stunt driver unable to control the mighty Mustang successfully, but some claim otherwise. However, after a bit of digging the truth comes to light.
According to the late Bud Ekins, one of McQueen’s long-time friends, the king of cool had originally intended to do the stunt driving himself but couldn’t keep up with the handler driving the Dodge Charger. On one particular take, McQueen lost control and spun out, nearly taking a cameraman with him. This is when Ekins, also McQueen’s stunt double, was told to take his place.
Although he never did the more difficult car control segments for the film, McQueen drove for a significant portion of the time. Something you certainly wouldn’t get past health and safety nowadays.
And of the two Mustangs? Sadly, one was damaged so badly after taking on San Francisco that it was deemed irreparable and scrapped by Ford. The other is out there somewhere - being sold to a Warner Brothers employee after filming wrapped up. Changing hands several times since then, it’s apparently stored in the deep south by someone refusing to part with it - despite holding front end damage and rusting camera mounts welded to the bodywork. Even Steve McQueen couldn’t get it back before his untimely death.

make the beast with two backs it, let’s roll it, just in case you haven’t seen it before (
) or it’s been awhile.
Oh, and if you’ve seen it a hundred times, and you’re a car buff. Check out all the vehicles parked on the streets. Some really nice stuff.

I really like the part just before car chase starts. That is one of the greatest editing you'd ever see.
(at 2:09, Bullitt's Mustang appears in Charger's rear view mirror, coming over the crest of the hill, transition stage one. (Guys in Charger who were chasing Bullitt(McQueen) is now being chased by Bullitt.)
Then, at 3:20, the Charger's driver (Bill Hickman) buckles up lap belt, telling the viewer audiences that now it's shifting into next stage.)
Late 1960's San Francisco, 68 Mustang Fastback and 68 Charger, upside down quick draw shoulder holster and Colt Diamondback (with round butt grip) ... (and he only fires twice. Yes, only two shots, in the entire film. And the way he moves 1911 away, with desert boots sole, then cover's the head of the body with his jacket ... how cool is that.)
Phillips 66 gas station (around 1:09 - 1:19) is still there, but now it's Exxon.
Army st is now called Cesar Chavez st ...
But, all these streets are still recognizable if you ride / drive around.

The second Stang (deemed non-repairable car) was found a few years ago in Mexico. Someone is restoring it.

Loud exhaust, Big cam valve overlap, double tap manual shifting, Cool stuff from The Day.
That appears to be a Winchester 97 shotgun also. Anyone who has thrashed 70's muscle cars
can understand the effort of that chase, with the Tires, Handling, Brakes,Wheelhop, etc.
