Changing from the stock gear ratio really, really improved my '13 796 Monster.  Stock gearing it felt like there never was a good gear for anything... except 6th for 100+ MPH.  Now I can corner in 2nd without having to slip the clutch, or over-rev it in 1st.  Yea, it really knocked off the top end, but given I need my drivers license for work, that isn't such a bad thing.  I think I hit the gearing right on... it's significantly more responsive, but it's not a wheelie machine, which I was trying to avoid.

Unless I change tranny cogs, I have to choose between too short a 1st gear or too tall a 6th gear.  The partial solution was to increase torque and hp by 10% ;D

I have been using 14 tooth front sprockets on my 696 for 13 years/55000km.  I still have the original 15 tooth sprocket in a box somewhere in my garage and will probably never use it it again.  Second gear is now usable in town, 6th gear can be used to pass without worry about having to downshift.  The only real issue is 1st is a really short gear and is of little use unless I'm creeping in a parking lot or something.  No issues or accelerated wear on any components.  The tendency to overthink on these things is real.
